The field hospital at the Mandeville Regional Hospital is now fully operational and is actively serving as a medium-term overflow medical facility for patients admitted through the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department. Established in response to increased patient inflows, following Hurricane Melissa, the unit represents a proactive step to strengthen service delivery capacity.

The facility can accommodate up to 22 patients and provides a dedicated space for individuals to receive care for the duration of their hospital stay. This strategic addition is already reducing congestion within the A&E department and improving patient flow across the institution.

The initiative reinforces the Southern Regional Health Authority’s commitment to delivering safe, efficient, and patient centred care. By expanding capacity and easing pressure on frontline services, the field hospital enhances the overall care environment for patients while supporting staff in delivering timely, quality healthcare services.

The Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth has received a donation of 50 computers along with a range of essential medical supplies including dressing sets and hazardous waste disposal bags, which will support daily clinical and administrative operations at the facility.

The items, valued at J$9 million were donated to the hospital by the Andrews Memorial Hospital Limited and officially handed over on Monday, February 23, 2026.

Hospital representatives expressed sincere appreciation for the contribution, noting that the computers arrive at a critical time as the institution prepares for staff appraisals and following the loss of equipment during last year’s hurricane.

The donated medical supplies, including specialised silicone foam dressings, will also strengthen patient care delivery and improve wound management practices across departments.

Jamaica’s long-term recovery following Hurricane Melissa requires partnership. The Southern Regional Health Authority is truly grateful for the pledge of support by United Kingdom (UK) Minister for the Caribbean, Chris Elmore.

He reaffirmed the UK Government’s commitment to supporting Jamaica’s long-term recovery and climate resilience following the impact of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa.

During a visit to St. Elizabeth, he highlighted the importance of investing in resilient infrastructure across disaster-vulnerable Caribbean nations. He toured the UK-funded Santa Cruz Smart Health Centre, which remained operational during Hurricanes Beryl and Melissa, and praised its strength and preparedness.

The SRHA assured Mr. Elmore that the UK’s investment in upgrading the Santa Cruz Health Centre as a SMART health facility, is “good value for money”.
