The Southern Regional Health Authority is a statutory body of the Ministry of Health. which is responsible for the efficient health care delivery to residents of Manchester, Clarendon and St. As one of four regional health authorities across the island, the SRHA delivers service through a network of 74 health centres, 5 hospitals, 1 community hospital and 2 rural maternity centres.

The Southern Regional Health Authority will be conducting mosquito fogging in communities across Manchester, St. Elizabeth and Clarendon during the week of December 22 to December 27.

Please review the schedule carefully for your area and take the necessary precautions during fogging times. Note that Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26 are holidays.

The Clarendon Health Department Mental Health Unit successfully hosted a Parent Mental Health Conference and Sip and Paint session on Friday, December 5, 2025, at the May Pen Hospital Conference Room.

Held in collaboration with the National Council on Drug Abuse, Clarendon Unit, the event brought together parents and caregivers for a day of meaningful discussions, practical mental health guidance, and creative expression aimed at promoting emotional wellbeing and resilience.

Participants benefited from informative sessions, open dialogue, and a therapeutic paint and sip activity, all designed to strengthen parenting capacity and support positive mental health outcomes within families.

Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, visited the field hospital at Black River High School on Friday, December 12, where he formally recognised the life saving work of Samaritan’s Purse, an international, nondenominational, evangelical Christian disaster relief organisation.

During the visit, the Minister praised the team for saving lives, transferring critical skills to local healthcare workers, and deploying advanced technology such as oxygen generators and a desalination plant. He also commended Samaritan’s Purse for training Jamaican staff and extending care through the mobile field hospital and community clinics.

The Southern Regional Health Authority reaffirmed its appreciation for partnerships that strengthen emergency response capacity and expand access to quality healthcare services across the region.

On Friday, December 12, Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton, team members from the Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth and a representative from Samaritan’s Purse, an international disaster relief organisation, toured the hospital to assess two major projects now progressing in parallel.

Work is moving swiftly on the relocation of the field hospital from Black River High School to the hospital compound, with Samaritan’s Purse coordinating construction, technical oversight, and training to ensure local teams are fully equipped to manage operations and maintenance going forward. The relocation is expected to be completed soon.

Equally significant is the restoration of the hospital’s main building, which is on track to be recommissioned in January. Dr. Tufton expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work underway, noting the importance of these developments for strengthening healthcare delivery in St. Elizabeth.

This is steady progress for Black River Hospital and a clear demonstration of partnership, planning, and commitment to patient care.

Raising Awareness in Alston for World AIDS Day

The Health Promotion Unit of the Clarendon Health Department joined students of Alston High School on Monday, December 1 to commemorate World AIDS Day and strengthen community awareness.

As one of our Jamaica Moves schools, Alston High led a spirited march from the campus to Alston Square, encouraging residents to know their HIV status through regular testing and promoting healthier lifestyle choices. Students from the Jamaica Moves club played a key role in engaging community members and sharing vital information.

The team also used the opportunity to educate the public about leptospirosis and the importance of early detection and prevention.

Newly Renovated A&E Waiting Area Handed Over at Lionel Town Hospital

The upgraded Accident and Emergency Waiting Area at the Lionel Town Hospital was officially handed over on Thursday, December 4.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Hon. Krystal Lee, delivered the keynote address and commended partners JAMALCO and Cousins Construction Limited for their $6.5 million investment, which has strengthened patient comfort and service delivery at the facility.

The Southern Regional Health Authority extends gratitude to the partners whose collaboration made the renovation possible and reaffirms its dedication to strengthening public healthcare across Clarendon, Manchester and St Elizabeth.

A Ministry of Health and Wellness Initiative: Supporting Our Healthcare Teams in St. Elizabeth

The Ministry of Health and Wellness, in collaboration with the Southern Regional Health Authority and key government agencies, hosted a Healthcare Workers Support Fair at the Newell Health Centre to assist staff who lost important documents and experienced property damage following Hurricane Melissa.

Representatives from the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency, the National Housing Trust, the National Land Agency, Tax Administration Jamaica and the Registrar General’s Department provided on-site services to reduce the burden on affected workers.

The SRHA remains committed to caring for its staff, who are the heart of the health system and must be supported as we rebuild.
