On March 28, the Department of Emergency Medicine hosted an international hybrid symposium for healthcare professionals titled “The Future of Emergency Medicine in Japan Pioneered by Hospital Paramedics (HPS).” This symposium was aimed at physicians, nurses, paramedics, hospital administrators, government officials, and DMAT members. Dr. Hiroyuki Otsuka, Director of the Trauma and Emergency Center at our hospital, served as the facilitator, and the event was conducted in a hybrid format combining in-person attendance at our hospital’s Mita Hall with online participation. In addition to medical professionals and fire department personnel from within Japan, approximately 20 organizations participated, including attendees from Taiwan, South Korea, and Thailand.
The first half featured a “Keynote Lecture: The Current State of HPS and Perspectives on Disaster Medicine,” with speakers from Tokyo Hikifune Hospital and the Kaohsiung City Fire Bureau in Taiwan. The second half, titled “Panel Discussion: Proposals for a Japanese HPS Model,” featured a lively exchange of opinions on various themes from the perspectives of each country. Participants offered many positive comments, such as: “I learned a great deal about the history, current roles, and future vision of hospital paramedics”; “It was easy to understand and fascinating, including the videos”; “It was meaningful to learn about emergency medical systems in other countries such as Taiwan, South Korea, and Thailand”; and “I definitely want to participate again in the future.”
This symposium was highly significant in clarifying the roles and challenges that hospital paramedics should undertake through a multifaceted comparison with emergency medical systems across Asian countries. By sharing insights from various countries, we were able to outline a more concrete path forward for the Japanese HPS model. Going forward, it is expected that by continuing and further developing this international collaboration, we will promote the establishment of an “Asia One Team” model based on mutual cooperation, leading to the realization of next-generation emergency medical systems.
