Webinar Recap: African-Centered Approaches in Psychotherapy

On Wednesday, we hosted our final CPD of the year — a deeply grounding session led by Dr. Joyce Wangari.
We explored what it truly means to offer psychotherapy that is culturally rooted, context-aware, and reflective of the African lived experience.

Key reflections from the session:
• The frameworks that already exist around culture + psychology
• How to translate theory into everyday therapeutic tools
• How African identity shapes the therapeutic relationship
• Why 2026 must be the year we intentionally integrate culturally grounded practice

This session reminded us of something essential:
Our clients deserve interventions that honor who they are — not theories that assume who they should be.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a meaningful conversation.

Let’s continue building a practice that truly reflects and serves our people.

We held a Money Way Series for HR professionals a while back this year.

The conversation was centred on supporting Human Resource professionals to manage their money and mental health as they spend their day-to-day supporting employees.

Right now, Human Resource professionals have a lot on their plate:

• performance reviews

• budgets, approvals, and adjustments

• restructuring conversations

• engagement challenges

If you're an HR, this should be resonating with your to-do list this week.

In Q1 2026, we're looking to not add more to your plate — but to lighten the load.

To support you through:

✔ capacity-building that boosts productivity

✔ structured employee wellness programs

✔ practical mental health support

We do this because when Human Resources is supported, the entire organization feels the impact.

✔ The teams perform better.

✔Workflows stabilize.

✔The culture improves.

This month, a company we're to work with in January is setting up its mid-year goals.

They have their client and revenue targets, and the events they want to hold to build brand awareness in their immediate community.

But one thing was missing: - People's readiness.

Like any other company, the plan is solid, but leadership isn't sure that the team has the capacity to deliver right off the bat in January.

+ Keep up that momentum going as the year proceeds.

The people-focused elements often get pushed aside, even though they determine how well the strategy actually works.

That’s why many 2026 plans are missing:
❌ Employee wellness budgets tied to KPIs
(Without funding, wellness becomes an afterthought — not a driver of performance.)

❌ Mental health support for Q1 pressure
(Teams come back exhausted from Q4, then jump straight into new targets without recovery.)

❌ Productivity systems for high-growth goals
(Ambitious targets are set, but the systems to sustain productivity aren’t.)

We helped this company adjust its strategy by adding simple, practical workplace mental health solutions and employee wellness systems aligned with its goals for the new year.

A strategy is only as strong as the people who have the energy to execute it.

Every year, around this time, from November to January, we notice the same pattern — teams start slowing down.

In our Kenyan context specifically, this year, the dip is deeper.

Last week, during a client check-in, one HR manager told us:

“I feel like the team is still working… but the energy is gone.”

Even they themselves have mentally clocked out by 3 pm.

Every day is a step towards the break in December.

And she’s right.

With tighter budgets, political tension, and constant pressure to hit year-end targets, employees are showing silent burnout.

However, set KPIs and profit margins don’t pause.

Employees need to show up and still perform, regardless of how tired they are.

It's also the time that companies are hosting team bonding sessions and retreats to engage the team in preparation for the new year.

It's a confusing season, and this is why we do the work we do.

At Hopewell, we help HR teams boost employee productivity through tailored employee wellness programs that restore energy and engagement — before the new year begins.

Why?
Because productivity is not a January issue.
It’s a November-December decision.

👉 If your team is slowing down, DM “2026” and we’ll plan an Employee Wellness program together.

Grief can be so encapsulating that everything else seems irrelevant.
When you find a space to share your grief with others who have been there, for sure it can save your life and mental wellbeing.

That is the role the amazing volunteers who facilitate Grief Share play.

They volunteer over 15weeks consistently each Saturday to hold space for those experiencing grief.

This Saturday it was our delight to equip them with more skills on facilitating group therapy to ensure that they take care of themselves even as they hold space for others to heal.

Thank you for passionately ensuring that those who serve in this department are continuously equipped to give their best.

We are proud to support you and the church in this mandate.

Last week we trained the Counseling Team at on Emerging Trends and best practises in counseling.

To start us off we played a set of cards from the game Where Should We Begin by and the stories got deep, real and personal very fast!!!

You see, training counselors who serve in church is very different because of the balance of christianity and psychology.

We answered questions on how to integrate emerging interventions into the practise of counseling and will be back to tell you what the team had to say about it.

Thank you for trusting our expertise in equipping your team.

If you would like to upskill your team, please send us a message and we will be glad to equip you for excellent impact and growth!!

How many times have you sat down to watch the news, only to feel that familiar knot in your stomach?

Another story of corruption, another life lost to homicide or femicide, another system failing those who need it most. It’s exhausting, isn’t it?

An advantage for you as a Counselor is that you're equipped to self-regulate.

How about your clients?

News isn’t just headlines—it’s real experiences that shape how your clients think, speak, and react.

They reinforce patterns of fear, anger, and helplessness, both for us and for the clients we serve.

On the 30th September 2025, from 6:30pm EAT on Zoom, we'll be having a Lifelong Learning session on Complex Trauma.

Ready to learn how to support your clients navigate this experience? Sign up using the link below or visit the link in our bio.

Our Story

She walked into her office amidst the stares of her colleagues. "I must be looking really great," she thought to herself. Several minutes later, the HR Manager walked in and told her she was fired as the company was downsizing. " How will I manage, where will I get the money to clear my car loan, what will my children eat now that my husband is also out of a job?" she asked herself as the HR Manager talked on. With all these unanswered questions in mind, she packed her laptop back into her bag and walked out of her office. That is how life can change! We are here to help you cope and regain the fulfillment your life had. To help you heal, feel restored and flourish beyond expectation.

HIS STORY

“My wife is packing her bags and wants to leave. She got wind of my affair and I have no idea what to do or say to get her to stay.” He said almost sobbing.

It’s been two months now and all I can think of is how to get her back. She won’t pick my calls or respond to any of my messages. This is getting frustrating....
