One of the most alarming connections researchers and educators now emphasize is the link between identity crisis and drug abuse. When a young person lacks a strong sense of self, they are more vulnerable to outside pressures, cravings for acceptance, and the lure of substances that promise escape or belonging. Understanding how identity crisis fuels drug abuse is key for parents, teachers, mentors, and employers who want to intervene before poor choices turn into lifelong battles. Without clarity about who they are and what they stand for, teens can easily spiral into cycles of dependency, toxic relationships, and lost potential.

Here's how Co***ne works: Normally, after a message is sent from one neuron to another, the brain cleans up by taking back some of those chemicals. But Co***ne blocks this cleanup, so the brain keeps having lots of extra messengers hanging around. This makes your brain go into overdrive, which causes a really strong "high" or feeling of happiness.

Parents and teachers stand as the two strongest pillars of a child’s life. When both environments work together, a child’s mental and emotional well-being can thrive. But when communication breaks down between these two worlds, children often fall through the cracks.

📊 A 2025 report by the National Council for Population and Development shows a growing mental health crisis among adolescents in Kenya. About 13% of teens experience depression or anxiety, and roughly 4% report suicidal thoughts. Alongside disease and other causes, su***de and homicide are among common causes of teenage mortality.

Key pressures on teens and youth:
- Economic hardship: many educated young people remain unemployed or lack stable income, which fuels frustration and despair.
- Limited services and stigma: poor access to care and stigma keep many cases undetected or untreated.
- Social isolation: urbanization, economic pressures, and changing family dynamics weaken traditional support systems.
- Academic stress: high expectations, exam pressure, uncertainty about the future, and fear of failure add to distress.

Why teens and youth seem most vulnerable:
- High levels of depression and anxiety linked to school stress, peer pressure, and emotional changes.
- Unemployment or underemployment and financial uncertainty that clash with expectations.
- Poor access to mental health care and stigma around seeking help.
- Weakened family and community networks that leave many feeling isolated.
- Pressure to perform, secure stable jobs, and make it in life that can trigger hopelessness.

What is being done and what is needed:
- The government adopted a national Su***de Prevention Strategy 2021 to 2026 to reduce su***de mortality by 10% by 2026, improve access to support, and strengthen surveillance and support systems.
- Experts call for integrated action that combines health services, school-based support, community and faith-based interventions, and stigma reduction.
- Early identification of anxiety and depression among adolescents is essential so interventions start before distress escalates.

How organizations can help right now:
- Use social channels to normalize help seeking and share youth-friendly resources and helplines 📣
- Run awareness campaigns in schools and communities, then partner with local providers for referrals 🤝
- Train staff as mental health first aiders and measure engagement so the most effective messages scale 🧠
