Pain at the back of the heel is most often caused by what is called calcaneal bursitis. This is inflammation of some fluid filled spaces between the Archiles tendon and the bone of the back of the foot (calcaneous). This is caused by repeated overuse or trauma especially by wearing tight shoes when running, jogging or walking long distances. It can also be caused by gout or rheumatoid arthritis.
