‎It's World Autism Acceptance Week. Autism is a lifelong neurological condition that affects how people communicate, interact, and experience the world. Autism can involve unique communication styles, sensory sensitivities (to light, sound, touch), strong attention to detail and deep focus, and different ways of interacting socially.

‎Many autistic individuals possess incredible strengths like creativity, innovation, honesty, and exceptional problem solving skills yet without understanding and inclusion, they may face barriers in education, employment, and daily life.

‎A truly inclusive society is one where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and therefore, we should jointly endeavor to celebrate neurodiversity, break stigma and misconceptions, build inclusive communities, and recognize the value and contributions of autistic individuals.

‎Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital's (MeTRH's) Radiology Unit plays a critical role in care especially in the fight against cancer where early detection and accurate staging often mean the difference between life and death. From the first suspicion of illness to the determination of how far it has progressed, radiology provides a roadmap that guides clinicians towards effective treatment. It is here that diseases are uncovered, injuries are assessed, and life saving decisions begin to take shape.

‎Equipped with state of the art equipment and technology, the unit offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic services including mammography for breast cancer screening, CT scans for detailed internal imaging, ultrasound services with color Doppler for real time assessment of organs and blood flow, and general X-rays for routine and emergency evaluations. Additional specialized services include OPG imaging for dental and maxillofacial assessment, as well as cardiac diagnostics such as electrocardiograms (ECG) and echocardiograms which monitor and evaluate heart function.

‎The unit also provides critical imaging support for patients in intensive care units (ICU) and during surgical procedures in theatres, ensuring continuous and reliable diagnostic services for patients in critical conditions. On average, the Radiology Unit attends to approximately 3,500 patients monthly. A significant number of these cases involve fractures, reflecting both the burden of trauma and the essential role of imaging in emergency and orthopedic care.

‎A dedicated team of professionals including radiologists, technicians, and support staff, work tirelessly behind the scenes and collaborate seamlessly translating images into life saving insights. They ensure that every diagnosis is both timely and precise.

‎In a heartfelt and educational commemoration of World Kidney Day, staff and patients at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH)’s renal unit came together to raise awareness about the importance of kidney health amid a growing burden of kidney disease in Meru. It was a celebration of resilience for patients undergoing treatment, and a call to action for the community to take better care of their kidneys through preventive health practices and early medical intervention.

‎MeTRH’s renal unit is equipped with 13 dialysis machines and serves approximately 350 patients monthly, making it one of the region’s key centers of renal care. It also includes a dedicated isolation room for patients with hepatitis, ensuring safe and specialized treatment. For many patients, dialysis is not just a treatment but a lifeline that allows them to continue their daily lives while managing chronic kidney disease. The unit's medical team works tirelessly to ensure patients receive consistent care, counseling, and support throughout their treatment.

‎Healthcare workers emphasized that although dialysis plays a critical role in saving lives, prevention of kidney disease remains the most effective way to protect community health. They attributed the rising cases of kidney disease to conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, diseases that directly affect the kidneys, urinary tract obstruction, congenital kidney defects, and drug abuse or misuse of medication.

‎The MeTRH renal team encouraged the public to adopt healthier lifestyles and prioritize routine health check-ups. They also advised proper control of blood pressure and blood sugar levels, undergoing regular medical screening, seeking early treatment for minor illnesses, and avoiding unnecessary over the counter medications. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet, adequate water intake, regular exercise, healthy body weight, and avoiding smoking while reducing alcohol consumption, were highlighted as key steps in preventing kidney disease and promoting overall wellbeing.

‎Simple steps to protect your vision

‎Get regular eye examinations – Even if you do not notice vision problems, routine screening helps detect changes early.

‎Eat a balanced diet – Foods rich in vitamins A, C, E, and omega 3 fatty acids support healthy vision. Include leafy vegetables, carrots, fruits, fish, and nuts in your meals.

‎Reduce screen strain – Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

‎Protect your eyes from sunlight – Wear sunglasses or a hat when outdoors to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays.

‎Avoid smoking – Smoking increases the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

‎Manage chronic diseases – Conditions like diabetes and hypertension can damage the eyes if not well controlled.

‎Many children struggle in school due to undetected vision problems. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to ensure children receive regular eye screening, especially if they complain of headaches, difficulty reading, or squinting.
