It's Maternal Health Awareness Day. Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. While motherhood should be a time of joy and hope, many women still face preventable risks that threaten their lives and wellbeing. Most maternal complications can be avoided through timely access to quality healthcare, skilled birth attendance, and accurate health information. MeTRH offers a wide range of maternal and child care services.

‎Tips
‎1. Attending Antenatal Care (ANC) visits early and regularly helps detect and manage conditions such as high blood pressure, anaemia, infections, and other risks that may affect both mother and baby.
‎2. Deliver in a health facility with skilled healthcare providers who are trained to manage deliveries and respond swiftly to emergencies.
‎3. Postnatal care is very important. Mothers should attend postnatal clinics for monitoring, breastfeeding support, family planning counselling, and mental health screening.
‎4. A balanced diet before, during, and after pregnancy strengthens immunity, prevents complications, and supports healthy fetal growth.
‎5. Maternal health is not only physical. Emotional and psychological wellbeing during pregnancy and after childbirth is essential and should never be overlooked.

‎A delegation from Samburu county led by Health Services CECM Dr. Nassir Lekudere visited Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) today on a benchmarking tour aimed at strengthening health service delivery, governance, and operational efficiency at Samburu County Teaching and Referral Hospital. They paid MeTRH CEO Dr. Bernard Murithi a courtesy call before embarking on the two-day benchmarking exercise.

‎Drawn from Samburu County Referral Hospital and four sub-county hospitals, the team seeks to study best practices in hospital management and service delivery with the objective of enhancing institutional capacity through exposure to proven systems and models under implementation at MeTRH which is transitioning to level six status.

‎They focused on several key areas including hospital governance and administration, management of medical students and interns, revenue systems and financial management, health records and health information systems, best practices in outpatient and inpatient service delivery, management of hospital health products and technologies, and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).

‎This engagement has provided an opportunity for Samburu county’s health leadership and management teams to gain practical insights into effective hospital operations, with a goal of translating these lessons into improved healthcare outcomes back home. The delegation commended MeTRH for its excellence and exceptional service delivery.

‎Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Often referred to as the silent thief of sight, glaucoma can damage vision gradually without early warning signs. Once vision is lost, it cannot be restored, making early detection and regular eye check-ups essential. Vision loss begins slowly from the sides (peripheral vision) and may go unnoticed until the disease is advanced.

‎Anyone can develop glaucoma but the risk is higher for:
‎1. People aged 40 years and above
‎2. Individuals with a family history of glaucoma
‎3. People with diabetes or high blood pressure
‎4. Those who have had eye injuries or prolonged use of steroid medications

‎The only way to detect glaucoma early is through a comprehensive eye examination by a trained eye care professional. Comprehensive eye screening services are available at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital's (MeTRH's) state of the art eye clinic.

‎This Glaucoma Awareness Month we encourage everyone to go for regular eye check-ups, get screened early especially if you are at risk, encourage family and community members to have their eyes examined, and seek medical advice promptly if you notice changes in your vision.

Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer related deaths among women, yet it is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when detected early. Cervical Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the importance of prevention, regular screening, and timely treatment to safeguard the health and lives of women and girls.

‎Cervical cancer can be prevented through:
‎1. HPV vaccination which is recommended for girls from the age of 9 years
‎2. Regular cervical screening (Pap smear or HPV testing) for women aged 25 - 65 years
‎3. Safe sexual practices and reduced exposure to HPV
‎4. Seeking medical attention early when unusual symptoms occur

‎Women are encouraged to seek medical advice if they experience abnormal vaginal bleeding, unusual vaginal discharge, and pelvic pain or pain during in*******se.

‎Routine cervical screening helps detect pre-cancerous changes before they develop into cancer. We offer screening services at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH). Get screened.

‎Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) has marked a major milestone in provision of specialized healthcare following the successful performance of Posterior Sagittal Anorectoplasty (PsARP) and open pyeloplasty surgeries at the state of the art MeTRH KidsOR theatre.

‎The procedures were carried out by MeTRH pediatric surgeon Dr. Simon Munyoki in collaboration with a visiting specialist from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Dr. Syovata Munyalo. Supported by a dedicated MeTRH surgical team, the two specialists performed these advanced pediatric surgeries in Meru for the first time ever ensuring timely treatment, reducing financial burden of accessing specialized pediatric care, and significantly improving access to essential surgical interventions for children. These pediatric surgical breakthroughs which are fully covered by SHA, happened at a time when MeTRH is transitioning to level six status.

‎Dr. Munyalo noted that the success of these procedures demonstrates MeTRH's growing capacity to handle complex pediatric conditions locally, reducing the need for families to travel long distances for specialized care in strong alignment with H.E. Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia’s health agenda which prioritizes expanding access to quality and specialized healthcare services across the county.

‎The hospital led by its CEO Dr. Bernard Murithi continues to invest in infrastructure, equipment, specialist skills, and partnerships that enhance its capacity to deliver top tier medical services to Meru residents and the region as a whole.

Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital's (MeTRH's) Board Chairperson Prof. Jotham Micheni and CEO Dr. Bernard Murithi presided over the hospital management’s end of year review meeting and team building exercise themed “One Team, One Goal” today. Division and unit heads came together for a comprehensive capacity building session aimed at strengthening leadership, efficiency, and collaborative service delivery.

‎The training focused on strengthening core management competencies that are essential for a high performing healthcare system in line with H.E. Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia’s health agenda. Participants received intensive capacity building on effective decision making, interdepartmental collaboration, leadership efficiency, operational clarity and speed, strengthened care coordination, strategic planning, policy implementation, human resource management, and fostering trust and professionalism. It also equipped them with skills to leverage a multigenerational workforce, and align day to day operations with MeTRH’s vision, mission, and strategic goals. Additionally, participants gained skills in conflict resolution, transparent and accountable governance, ethical leadership, and prudent use of resources.

‎Following the intensive theoretical sessions, the management team engaged in outdoor team building activities tailored to practically demonstrate and reinforce the learned values and lessons. These activities also provided an opportunity for them to unwind, rejuvenate, and build stronger interpersonal bonds.
