A two-day bronchoscopy camp that is aimed at improving the diagnosis and management of chronic respiratory illnesses is ongoing at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) led by MeTRH Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Hassan Ibrahim, and Head of Pulmonology at KNH Dr. Andrew Owuor, courtesy of a collaboration with Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

‎The free screening camp which has brought together specialists from both institutions, is targeting patients suffering from chronic respiratory conditions which are among the most common health concerns at MeTRH. It marks a huge step forward in MeTRH’s journey towards establishing specialist pulmonology services, a field that has become increasingly vital due to the rising number of respiratory ailments.

‎Bronchoscopy which is an invasive diagnostic procedure, is a critical tool for evaluating and managing respiratory diseases. It will also enable doctors to undertake minimally invasive procedures that will significantly improve patient care and reduce the need for referrals to distant facilities, reflecting H.E. Governor Mutuma M'Ethingia's commitment to revolutionizing Meru county's health sector.

‎A multidisciplinary team that includes adult and pediatric pulmonologists, pulmonology nurses, physicians, and a thoracic surgeon, is working together to assess and manage patients.

‎A mammogram is a special type of X-ray that takes detailed pictures of the breast. It helps doctors look for early signs of breast cancer even before you can feel a lump or notice any changes. Women aged 40 years and above are encouraged to undergo regular mammogram screening every one to two years.

‎Women with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors may need to start screening earlier as advised by a healthcare provider. Even women who have no symptoms or visible changes in their breasts should still go for routine screening.

‎A mammogram is a quick, safe, and simple procedure that typically takes about 15 minutes. During the test, the patient stands in front of an X-ray machine, and each breast is gently placed between two plates that press briefly to capture clear images. The process may feel slightly uncomfortable but should not be painful. Afterwards, a radiologist reviews the images for any abnormalities. Breast cancer can be treated successfully when detected early. Afya yako ni jukumu lako.

‎How to do a simple but effective self breast examination at home. ‎Ensure that you perform a self breast exam once every month, about a week after your period. Follow these simple steps:

‎1. Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and your hands on your hips. Look for any changes in shape, size, color, or swelling.

‎2. Raise your arms and check to see if both breasts move evenly and look symmetrical.

‎3. Check your ni***es for any discharge whether watery, milky, yellow, or bloody.

‎4. While standing, use the pads of your three middle fingers to feel your breasts in small circular motions, covering the entire area from top to bottom and from side to side.

‎5. While lying down, repeat the same motion using the pads of your three middle fingers. The breast tissue spreads more evenly in this position, making it easier to detect any lumps or thickened areas.

‎If you notice something unusual, don’t panic. Most breast changes are not cancerous but it’s important to visit a healthcare provider immediately for screening. Remember, cancer is treatable if diagnosed early. Afya yako ni jukumu lako.

‎Breast cancer remains one of the top five leading cancers in Meru, affecting women of all ages and backgrounds. Statistics indicate that new cases are diagnosed yearly, many at advanced stages when treatment is complex and costly. Yet, doctors insist that it doesn’t have to be this way. Breast cancer like any other cancer, is curable when detected early.

‎Breast cancer doesn’t always announce itself loudly. Often, it begins quietly with subtle changes like a small lump, a change in the shape of the ni**le, or dimpling of the skin. These warning signs are easy to miss unless a woman knows her own body well, and that’s where self examination comes in. Sparing a few minutes once a month, preferably a week after your period, can make all the difference. While self examination is vital, clinical screening remains the gold standard for early detection. Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) offers breast cancer screening services throughout the year.

‎Breast cancer is often thought of as a women’s disease but men can get it too. Beyond that, men play a powerful role in encouraging their mothers, wives, and daughters to go for screening. Take a bold step to get screened and start doing regular self examinations. After all, afya yako ni jukumu lako. Join us tomorrow as we discuss how to do a simple but effective self breast examination at home.

‎The Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Unit at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) is an unsung beacon of hope in the fight against the huge burden of cancer and other ENT conditions in Meru. It plays a crucial role in early detection, timely treatment, and specialized surgical interventions, especially in cancers of the thyroid, larynx, pharynx, head, and neck regions, where early interventions can mean the difference between life and death.

‎An average of 900 patients who are drawn from Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Laikipia, Marsabit, and Mandera counties are attended to monthly. Availability of specialized ENT care at MeTRH has significantly reduced the need for Meru residents to travel long distances in search of treatment, thereby improving access and survival rates.

‎A wide range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical services are offered, including ENT consultations and screenings, treatment of infections, nasal irrigation and packing, ear syringing, removal of foreign bodies, as well as audiology services such as hearing loss diagnosis, management, and vestibular rehabilitation. The team also performs life changing surgeries such as adenotonsillectomy, thyroidectomy, tumor removal, and tracheostomy insertions, among other specialized procedures. By providing these services locally, MeTRH is ensuring timely interventions, reducing the financial burden on families, and improving patient outcomes.

‎The Unit operates from Monday to Friday, staffed by a dedicated team of medical professionals whose impact has been immense not only in delivering specialized care, but also in advancing the fight against cancer in alignment with H.E. Governor Mutuma M'Ethingia's health agenda.
