‎Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) is strengthening efforts to improve healthcare delivery through strategic collaborations. Today, the hospital’s CEO Dr. Bernard Murithi received a delegation of investors who paid him a courtesy call to explore potential areas of partnership with an aim of enhancing healthcare services.

‎Discussions centered on opportunities of collaboration in equipping, strengthening human resource capacity, and streamlining service delivery systems at the hospital to enhance MeTRH’s mission to provide quality, accessible, and efficient healthcare to Meru residents and the Upper Eastern region at large.

‎Public Private Partnerships have increasingly become a vital approach in the health sector, enabling public health institutions to leverage private sector expertise, technology, and investment to bridge gaps in healthcare infrastructure and service provision.

‎Simple steps to protect your vision

‎Get regular eye examinations – Even if you do not notice vision problems, routine screening helps detect changes early.

‎Eat a balanced diet – Foods rich in vitamins A, C, E, and omega 3 fatty acids support healthy vision. Include leafy vegetables, carrots, fruits, fish, and nuts in your meals.

‎Reduce screen strain – Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

‎Protect your eyes from sunlight – Wear sunglasses or a hat when outdoors to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays.

‎Avoid smoking – Smoking increases the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

‎Manage chronic diseases – Conditions like diabetes and hypertension can damage the eyes if not well controlled.

‎Many children struggle in school due to undetected vision problems. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to ensure children receive regular eye screening, especially if they complain of headaches, difficulty reading, or squinting.

‎Today, we join the global community in marking World Obesity Day. Obesity is a complex and chronic health condition that increases the risk of serious illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, and joint complications.

‎In Meru like many parts of Kenya, we are witnessing changing lifestyles characterized by reduced physical activity, increased consumption of processed foods, and sedentary habits, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas. These changes are contributing to rising cases of overweight and obesity among both adults and children. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasingly placing pressure on families, health facilities, and the local economy. Preventing obesity is a key step towards reducing the burden of NCDs and safeguarding the productivity and wellbeing of Meru residents.

‎At Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH), we continue to promote routine screening for BMI, blood pressure, blood sugar, provide nutrition counseling services, support community health promotion initiatives, and encourage preventive healthcare practices. We encourage everyone to engage in regular physical activity like walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, and other sporting activities of choice, choose balanced meals with traditional locally available foods such as vegetables, legumes, fruits, and whole grains, reduce intake of sugary drinks and highly processed foods, and encourage healthy habits within families and schools.

‎Gallbladder and bile duct cancers do not always announce themselves loudly. What may begin as mild abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight loss, nausea, or yellowing of the eyes and skin can easily be mistaken for common illnesses and by the time symptoms become severe, treatment options are often limited. Early detection remains the most powerful weapon against these cancers.

‎Recognizing the growing burden of cancer, the County Government of Meru under the leadership of H.E. Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia has made significant investments to strengthen cancer prevention, screening, and treatment.

‎At Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH), residents now benefit from advanced diagnostic services including ultrasounds, CT scans, and laboratory investigations that help detect abnormalities early. The hospital also offers specialized surgical services that allow for the safe and timely management of gallbladder and bile duct conditions. In addition, trained healthcare professionals are well equipped to diagnose, manage, and counsel patients, alongside providing cancer screening and comprehensive treatment to ensure patients receive timely specialized care.

‎Regular medical checkups especially for individuals with gallstones, chronic infections, or a family history of cancer, can aid in early detection and significantly improve treatment outcomes.

‎Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital's (MeTRH's) Newborn Unit (NBU) serves as a critical care center for babies born too soon, too small, or too sick. Premature infants, and newborns with infections, breathing difficulties, or complications at birth are given a second chance through specialized, round the clock care.

‎Equipped with incubators that regulate temperature, oxygen support machines that help tiny lungs breathe, and monitoring equipment that tracks every heartbeat, the unit provides an environment designed to replicate the safety of a mother’s womb while offering lifesaving medical support.

‎Beyond state of the art machines, it is human touch that defines this unit. Inside, nurses move with quiet urgency and gentle precision. They celebrate small milestones like a baby gaining weight, breathing without support, or finally being strong enough to breastfeed. Every discharged baby represents not just a life saved, but a future as a doctor, teacher, leader, or parent, restored.

‎The unit plays a vital role in reducing neonatal mortality in line with H.E. Governor Mutuma M'Ethingia's health agenda. As a referral hospital, it receives high risk newborns from multiple sub-counties and neighboring counties, ensuring that specialized care is accessible when it is needed most.

‎Behind every win is a team of dedicated professionals comprising of neonatal nurses, pediatricians, nutritionists, and support staff, whose expertise and compassion keep the unit running. They work through the day and night responding to alarms, adjusting treatments, and offering reassurance to anxious parents. Every day, parents walk into the NBU filled with fear and uncertainty and every day, many walk out carrying hope in their arms.

‎Early detection is vital in preventing and effectively treating cancer and other gastrointestinal diseases. Individuals aged 40 years and above or those experiencing persistent digestive symptoms, are encouraged to undergo endoscopy and colonoscopy screening for early diagnosis and prevention.

‎Early screening helps detect colon, stomach, and esophageal cancers, which often show subtle early symptoms such as abdominal pain, chronic heartburn, blood in stool, chronic diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Timely screening allows for early treatment and improved health outcomes.

‎To improve access, Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) offers endoscopy and colonoscopy services every Wednesday, serving both booked appointments and emergency cases using modern equipment and qualified specialists.

‎To encourage uptake, the hospital has made these services affordable with endoscopy services offered at Ksh4,500 and colonoscopy procedures at Ksh7,500, payable in cash. As such, Meru residents are encouraged to take advantage of these weekly screening services and seek prompt medical attention whenever symptoms arise.

‎Officials from Worldwide Hearing (WWH), Christian Blind Mission (CBM), and AIC Health Ministries paid Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital (MeTRH) CEO Dr. Bernard Murithi a courtesy call to reaffirm their commitment to partnering in delivering affordable hearing aids and comprehensive ear and hearing care services to Meru residents.

‎Key interventions under the project include establishing a fully equipped diagnostic audiology center at MeTRH, training nurses, other frontline health workers, and teachers to improve early detection and referral of hearing conditions, as well as integrating routine hearing screening services within schools and health facilities.

‎Dr. Murithi welcomed the initiative, noting that it will greatly strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide specialized ear, nose, and throat (ENT) services even as it transitions into a level 6 facility. He emphasized that the establishment of a diagnostic audiology center at MeTRH will significantly improve access to quality hearing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, particularly for vulnerable populations.

‎The delegation also toured the MeTRH ENT clinic which is poised to benefit immensely from the project through capacity building, specialized training, and provision of cutting edge medical equipment. This collaboration is expected to enhance service delivery, reduce referral cases to distant facilities, and improve overall patient outcomes in line with H.E. Governor Mutuma M'Ethingia's health agenda.

It's Maternal Health Awareness Day. Maternal health refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. While motherhood should be a time of joy and hope, many women still face preventable risks that threaten their lives and wellbeing. Most maternal complications can be avoided through timely access to quality healthcare, skilled birth attendance, and accurate health information. MeTRH offers a wide range of maternal and child care services.

‎Tips
‎1. Attending Antenatal Care (ANC) visits early and regularly helps detect and manage conditions such as high blood pressure, anaemia, infections, and other risks that may affect both mother and baby.
‎2. Deliver in a health facility with skilled healthcare providers who are trained to manage deliveries and respond swiftly to emergencies.
‎3. Postnatal care is very important. Mothers should attend postnatal clinics for monitoring, breastfeeding support, family planning counselling, and mental health screening.
‎4. A balanced diet before, during, and after pregnancy strengthens immunity, prevents complications, and supports healthy fetal growth.
‎5. Maternal health is not only physical. Emotional and psychological wellbeing during pregnancy and after childbirth is essential and should never be overlooked.
