“Hey Grace, I want to venture into the mitumba business but I don’t know where to start. Please advise.”
My dear ones, this is a question I get almost daily, so let me try to answer it honestly.
When it comes to mitumba business, the first thing you must do is research.
What do I mean by research?
Let’s say you want to sell chiffon tops in an open-air market like Gikomba. You must first find out:
- How much chiffon tops are selling at retail
- How much they are selling at wholesale
This helps you set the right price—not too high, not too low.
👉 By the way, never think charging lower than your neighbours will automatically give you more customers. Psychologically, it actually makes buyers suspicious ☺️☺️
Always aim for an average market price.
Once you know the selling price, you’ll automatically know which bale to buy—whether crème, Grade 1, or Grade 2.
For example:
If tops are selling at 150–350, you’re safe going for a Grade 1 chiffon tops bale (around 15k).
If tops are selling at 50–100, tafadhali settle for a bale of 10k and below.
Most people huchomeka not because the bale is bad, but because the market itself rejects the product.
If you’re planning to sell online, piga roundi Instagram and Facebook. See how others are pricing their items before you commit.
🚫 You can’t buy a bale, receive it, then start asking:
“Grace, nafaa kuuza how much?”
These are calculations you should estimate before buying the bale.
Another important thing, don’t rush into this business just because you’ve seen someone doing well.
Jiite kamkutano and ask yourself:
1. Can I handle making losses?
2. Can I handle days with zero sales?
3. Can I handle rude clients?
4. Am I ready to think outside the box?
5.
Lastly, a bitter truth for everyone in business:
If you want your business to be blessed, wacha wivu.
Usione jirani yako akiuza ukasikitika juu haujauza. Clean your conscience. Furahia mwenzako akiuza ukijua wako ako njiani.
You’ll notice in markets and vibandas, when one person steps out, the neighbour sells for them. That’s the power of a good heart.
