What is known as the Taita tribe actually consists of three separate but closely-related tribes: Wadawida (or Taita), Wasaghala (Sagalla) and Wataveta (Taveta). The languages of these three tribes are very similar to each other and to the Swahili language. The languages also bear some similarity to the language spoken by the Chagga people of Tanzania. The Wadawida tribe is the largest of the three, numbering about 300,000 people as of the last population census.
