Dear Readers / Institutions,

When hiring teachers, coaches, or therapists, institutions must prioritize more than skills—they must choose people with compassion, patience, and respect.

If someone cannot show basic respect to a responsible parent, can they truly be kind to a child, especially one with special needs?

Today I was spoken to rudely by a young man who coaches my son’s skating class. It left me wondering: who are we really entrusting our children to? Are they seen as individuals with dignity, or simply as tasks and clients?

Our children deserve environments where empathy and respect come first.

Autism is not witchcraft.
It is not a curse.
It is not caused by bad parenting.

Autism is a developmental condition — it simply means the child’s brain works differently.

Our children are not stubborn, spoiled, or “possessed.” They are unique. They feel deeply, learn differently, and need understanding — not judgment.

As a community, let us stop gossip and start learning.
Let us support families instead of isolating them.
Today it may be my child. Tomorrow it could be yours.

Awareness brings understanding.
Understanding brings acceptance.
Acceptance builds a stronger Kenya for all our children.

Did you know that autism and other related conditions are not contagious? Sadly, some people mistakenly believe that being around neurodiverse individuals could somehow affect them. This is simply not true. Neurodiversity is not something that can be “caught” or transmitted from person to person.

Conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, brain injury, muscular dystrophy, and other similar diagnoses are not contagious in any way. These are neurological or genetic differences, not illnesses that can be spread through contact or association.

I encourage you to take the time to learn and educate yourself about these conditions. They do not discriminate—they can affect anyone, regardless of race, background, or socioeconomic status. Understanding and compassion are the first steps toward creating a more inclusive world for everyone.
