The December 2025 Public Health Officers and Technicians Council -PHOTC Professional Examinations concluded today at KMTC Nairobi, with candidates undertaking practical assessments across six core public health stations covering sanitation and the built environment, community health, food science and inspection, general public health practice, public health engineering, and meat inspection. The examinations assessed both technical competence and practical skills essential for effective public health service delivery.

Speaking on behalf of the Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, KMTC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kelly Oluoch congratulated the candidates and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening a competent, ethical, and well-regulated public health workforce to safeguard communities and advance Universal Health Coverage.

PHOTC Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr. Anthony Wainaina emphasized that the Council remains committed to ensuring quality training and professional practice, noting that PHOTC is undertaking a planned revision of the public health curriculum alongside the development of a new strategic plan to guide the Council’s future growth and effectiveness.

The Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni together with leaders from various agencies, today visited Mji wa Huruma for the Aged as part of a Jamii Imara Mashinani social responsibility programme aimed at supporting vulnerable members of the community.

The visit, provided an opportunity to meet residents and caregivers and recognise the efforts of facility staff in ensuring the wellbeing of elderly residents.

Mji wa Huruma provides shelter, basic healthcare, and daily support to older persons who are without family care or adequate means of support.

Through the Jamii Imara Mashinani initiative, the Ministry of Health and partners continue to strengthen community-focused approaches that place people at the centre of social support.

The Government remains firmly committed to improving health and nutrition outcomes for all Kenyans, with a strong focus on protecting vulnerable populations and strengthening preventive, community-based interventions under the Universal Health Coverage agenda.

Today Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, hosted the World Food Programme (WFP) Country Director, Ms. Betty Ka, to advance collaboration in addressing nutrition vulnerabilities, particularly among children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, through strengthened surveillance, early warning systems, integrated outreach services, and reliable supply chains.

The discussions reaffirmed the value of the Government–WFP partnership in supporting nationally led systems, including the use of digital health platforms and the Community Health Promoters network, as well as ongoing efforts to develop a National Nutrition and Dietetics Policy and implement updated global guidelines on the management of acute malnutrition.

The Public Health Officers and Technicians Council (PHOTC) is this week administering the December 2025 Professional Examinations, at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nairobi. A total of 433 candidates are sitting for the examinations this week, comprising 256 certificate candidates, 26 diploma candidates, and 177 degree candidates.

These professional examinations are a critical step in strengthening a competent, ethical, and well-regulated public health workforce. By ensuring that only qualified and professionally certified officers and technicians are licensed to practice, the examinations play a key role in safeguarding community health, strengthening disease prevention and control, and advancing Kenya’s journey towards Universal Health Coverage. PHOTC has reaffirmed its commitment to a credible and secure examination process as it continues to uphold public health standards in the country.

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Human Resources for Health as a cornerstone of Universal Health Coverage.

This was highlighted today during a visit by Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kilifi Campus. Established in 1987, the campus has a student capacity of 978 and offers programmes in Medical Engineering, Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Community Health Nursing, Orthopaedic and Trauma Medicine, and Critical Care Nursing.

The visit focused on enhancing quality and standards, regulatory compliance, clinical training and partnerships, staff welfare, integrity and accountability, innovation, and community impact as key enablers of effective health workforce training. Engagements with students emphasized excellence, professionalism, ethical conduct, and a strong commitment to service in advancing people-centered healthcare.

Principal Secretary State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni today paid a courtesy call on the Kilifi County Commissioner, Mr. David S. Wanyonyi, ahead of the inspection of the KMTC Kilifi Campus.

The meeting focused on collaboration in key areas including drug and substance abuse prevention, community policing, Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and Community Health Promoters (CHPs).

Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Ms. Mary Muthoni, appeared on Kameme TV’s ARAHUKA morning show where she gave an update on the state of public health in Kenya and outlined key government health reforms currently underway.

During the interview, the PS addressed the status of the Social Health Authority, highlighting progress in its transition and rollout and emphasizing its central role in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

She also spoke about the recently signed US–Kenya Health Cooperation Framework, describing it as a transformative partnership that shifts from traditional donor dependency to a sustainable co-investment model aimed at strengthening Kenya’s health systems and improving long-term health outcomes.

Ms. Muthoni further explained the Jamii Imara Mashinani programme, noting that it is a government initiative focused on deepening citizen engagement and bringing public services closer to the people at the grassroots.

She also highlighted the Epuka Uchafu, Afya Nyumbani initiative, underscoring the critical role of sanitation and hygiene in disease prevention and explaining that the initiative promotes positive behaviour change at the household level to improve cleanliness, public health, and overall wellbeing.

The Government continues to advance socio-economic development as a key pillar of national progress. In this context, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, joined H.E. President William Ruto and other leaders for a church service at AIPCA Gatundu North Diocese, where they worshipped with the local community.

During the service, the President spoke on key development priorities, including road infrastructure and the implementation of Universal Health Coverage through the Social Health Authority (SHA).

In line with the Government’s commitment to bringing services closer to the people, Community Health Promoters from the area conducted SHA registration and basic health screenings for members of the community.

As the festive season approaches, the Ministry of Health has reiterated the importance of safeguarding life and health as Kenyans celebrate Christmas and usher in the New Year.

Speaking at the Omogusii O’Nairobi Kisii End-Year Thanksgiving meeting, Principal Secretary State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni highlighted key public health risks commonly associated with the festive period, including increased road traffic crashes, alcohol-related injuries, food poisoning, preventable infectious diseases, domestic violence, and disruptions in care for people living with chronic illnesses.

She urged Kenyans to celebrate responsibly by avoiding drunk driving, consuming alcohol in moderation, maintaining high standards of hygiene during social gatherings, observing food and water safety, and making informed sexual and reproductive health choices.

Laikipia Launches Epuka Uchafu Afya Nyumbani Campaign

Laikipia County has become the 11th county to launch the Epuka Uchafu Afya Nyumbani Campaign, a national initiative aimed at strengthening environmental sanitation, hygiene, and community health.

The campaign focuses on clean households, proper waste management, preventive healthcare, and community engagement. It aligns with Kenya Vision 2030 and the Kenya Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene Policy 2016–2030, which commits the country to universal access to improved sanitation.

County leaders noted that poor sanitation and rising drug and substance abuse,especially among youth,pose serious health and social challenges. The Ministry announced that Laikipia’s rollout will integrate environmental hygiene efforts with drug abuse awareness and prevention.

Residents, community leaders, and partners were urged to support the initiative, which aims to foster healthier communities and strengthen Laikipia’s long-term socio-economic development.

Senior leadership from the Ministry of Health today paid a courtesy call on Laikipia County Deputy Governor H.E. Reuben Kamuri and the Deputy County Commissioner for Laikipia East, Patrick Muli, ahead of the launch of the Epuka Uchafu Afya Nyumbani Campaign.

The discussions focused on strengthening preventive and promotive health as part of advancing Universal Health Coverage. Priority areas included integrating the Epuka Uchafu Initiative into Community Health and Primary Care Networks, exploring Public–Private Partnerships for solid waste management, and ensuring effective implementation and long-term sustainability of the programme.

Both sides underscored the critical role of collaboration between National Government Administrative Officers and County leadership in enhancing primary healthcare delivery.
