Intrauterine transfusion (IUT)

This is a procedure that provides blood to a fetus, most commonly through the umbilical cord. It is performed in cases where the fetus has a low blood level (severe anaemia). The common causes of fetal anaemia occur in patients who are rhesus-negative and don't receive anti-rhesus immunoglobulin while pregnant. This leads to the mother producing antibodies that cross over to the fetus, destroying fetal red blood cells. After a fetus is transfused, the fetus is monitored similarly to the way an adult who is anaemic is taken care of after receiving blood. Ensure you know your blood group and rhesus status for any pregnant mother attending the antenatal clinic.

Women who have had elevated blood pressure in their previous pregnancies are advised to take Low-dose aspirin for prophylaxis to prevent the recurrence of the same in their current pregnancy. This should be started between 12 weeks to 36 weeks of gestation. Please visit us immediately after conception for appropriate follow-up.

Antenatal care visit is one of the essential components of care for pregnant women; this helps in early detection, managing, and prevention of problems during the pregnancy and helps the mother receive complete packages of antenatal care services. The problem we encounter as gynaecologists is that many pregnant mothers are coming for antenatal clinic very late in their pregnancy. If there were any disease or complication in pregnancy, it would be advanced and may contribute to poor outcome for the mother and the pregnancy. We advice mothers to visit the clinic as soon as they detect they are pregnant. The best option would be to see a gynaecologist before conceiving or while planning to get pregnant.

Cancer of the o***y is an abnormal growth that occurs in the eggs of the female reproductive system ( ovaries). In most women, ovarian cancer gives no symptoms in the early stages, often leading to late diagnosis when it has spread to adjacent organs like the intestines, liver and walls of the tummy. The risk that predisposes women to ovarian cancer is a close relative having cancer of the o***y or breast, women above the age of 50, obesity or being overweight, hormonal replacement therapy for women treating menopause symptoms, and women who have never conceived. Any woman with a history of the mentioned risk factors should undergo Screening or routine medical checkups. Women with any of these symptoms should seek treatment: pain or pressure in the lower tummy, unexplained bleeding, back pain, bloating, change in bowel habits or feeling full rapidly while eating.
