iDC and Development Communication

iDC – Intermedia Development Consultants – is going to live up more fully to its name. In the years since its founding in 1988, we have put great store on the quality of our research studies, strategic reviews and evaluation reports. A few of our consultants have regularly written articles on development themes, or maintained newspaper columns and one has founded a travel magazine. We have produced occasional videos on humanitarian or development project activities. Now, we have decided to expand and promote a wider range of inter-media services.

With skills in writing, editing, photography, filming, graphic design and training, these are the community development services we are offering:

• Developing project briefs: telling the story of projects – their objectives and strategy, challenges and achievements;
• Tracking the progress of a project by journalists and photographers;
• Writing and illustrating stories of change – the impacts of projects on the lives and livelihoods of beneficiaries;
• Developing policy briefs, focusing on the approach to addressing specific issues in project implementation – for dissemination, particularly, to other agencies engaged in similar work;
• Producing text, photographs and video clips for dissemination through social media;
• Graphic design and editing of project documents and reports;
• Training in writing project proposals and reports, the use of community-based theatre and role plays within community engagement strategies, and the use of imaging techniques in cross-cultural communication.

2021 has been an interesting year for those in the development co-operation field. The impact of COVID-19 and the associated directives in many of the countries in which we operate have altered the way development initiatives are being carried out. Here is a quick update on what the members of iDC team has been up to over the last few months.

John and Ruth are currently finalising the baseline study as part of the British Council's component of the Better Migration Management Programme in Ethiopia and Sudan. With less than a year to go before the programme is completed, the team is working with the British Council to contribute to an inprovement in the quality of migration governance in the Horn of Africa.

John recently completed a thematic review of ADRA Denmark's approach to working within the humanitarian-development nexus. The evaluation assessed the extent to which ADRA Denmark's understanding and approach to working within the nexus contributed to improved resilience among communities affected by the protracted crises in Sudan and Syria. The review also provided specific recommendations on how ADRA could improve their work within the nexus.

Jan, Kelvin and Laure - a new associate consultant with iDC - carried out an endline evaluation of a food security programme for Mercy Corps in North Kivu, DRC. The FARM programme works to improve access to, control over and utilisation of land for approximately 64,000 households in North Kivu and improve targeted market systems, contributing to food security.

Abdullahi, Mohamed, Jan, Kelvin and Deman - a public health expert - finalised a feasibility study for a health sector project in Banadir, Somalia for action medeor, a medical aid organisation in Europe.

Again for action medeor, Mohamed, John, Kelvin and Abdullahi carried out the endline evaluation for a food security project in Somalia. iDC was also contracted to carry out third-party monitoring for the same project.

2017 has been a busy but exciting year for the iDC team .Here is a quick update on what the consultants have been up to over the last few months.

Jan and John recently signed an extension to continue carrying out the third-party monitoring of Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF) funded projects across Somalia for UN OCHA. With just 16 projects left to monitor, they have had a broad range of projects and the most recent ones mainly involving monitoring primary health care projects.

John, Abdikadir and Gabie are busy with an extensive third party monitoring of UNDP Somalia programmes, including Government and Rule of Law, and Support to Emerging Federal States. As an extension of the UNDP third party monitoring Abdikadir is also currently managing a review of the state of federalism in Somalia.

Additionally John, along with our new consultant Abduba, are about to start a KAP Survey and design a communication strategy for GIZ's Fish for Nutrition Project in Kismayo. They are also assisting in the formulation of the programme document for JPLG III.

It has been a very busy year for John as he is also involved in running training programmes based on the Wadahadal Resource Pack with Civic Education facilitators in Jubaland for UNICEF, and is facilitating consultations with state ministries of interior for their Civic Education strategies.

We also welcome Fatuma, our newest member of the business development team.
