Smoke damage restoration is something that many homeowners have to go through at some point. A fire in your home can be devastating and cause many problems. However, it is possible to eliminate smoke damage and get back to your previous lifestyle. Here are the basics of smoke damage restoration.

Step 1--Clean Up Soot

Before you can effectively remove the smoke smell from the house, you will first need to eliminate any soot or ashes that are left over. Many times, significant amounts of ashes can get on the floor and into the carpet. In order to remove them, you will need to utilize a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner. Suck up all of the soot and ashes from the floor and remove it from the house.

Step 2--Use Ozone Machine

One of the greatest tools that is available for smoke damage restoration is the ozone machine. Many restoration companies utilize this type of machine in order to eliminate smoke smell in houses. An ozone machine produces ozone gas that will travel throughout the house and break down the smoke on a molecular level. This is the most effective way to get rid of smoke smell inside of a house. However, when utilizing this machine, you will want to make sure that no one is around. You need to leave it running inside the house for a few days and make sure that no one enters during that period. You should put up warning signs on all the doors and make sure that the house is locked. Otherwise, you could cause significant lung damage to anyone that is around. When you turn the machine off, it sure that you allow the house to air out before working in it again.

Step 3--Use Bleach

With items that will not be damaged by bleach, you should clean them with bleach in order to remove the smoke. Fill a bucket with bleach and drop small items into the bucket. Allow the items to soak for several hours and then remove them from the bucket.

Step 4--Dry Clean

If your clothes got smoke on them, you will need to take them to a dry cleaner in order to remove the smoke smell. Most of the time, simply washing the clothes in the washer will not fully remove the smell.

Step 5--Paint the Walls

Sometimes, you will need to repaint the walls in order to cover up the smoke smell. If the ozone machine fails to eliminate the smoke from the walls, use a paint roller and thoroughly cover the wall with a new coat of paint.

Step 6--Clean the Carpet

If you have carpet in your house, it will inevitably need to be cleaned in order to get rid of the smoke smell. You should utilize a steam cleaner for best results. In most cases, you will need to clean the carpet least twice for best results. If the smell continues to persist, you may have to replace the carpet.
