👁️✨ Eye health is about more than just sight.
At the Ophthalmic Nurses Chapter meeting in Nairobi South, we reflected on how age, community and mental health all shape the eye-care experience.
A study shared showed:
• Older eye-care providers may see fewer patients but they often receive higher client satisfaction than younger colleagues.
This reminds us that age-diverse teams give patients both efficiency and depth of experience.
The study calls for:
✅ Age-balanced eye health teams
✅ Ergonomic support for older staff
✅ Strong CPD & mentoring so experience can be passed on.
Our Country Director, Edwin, also unpacked five big ideas for stronger eye health systems: Affordability, Quality, Equity, Inclusivity and Sustainability – all grounded in working with communities.
We also talked about something often ignored: the link between visual impairment and mental health. Losing or living with reduced sight affects confidence, independence and relationships.
Our call:
🧠 Fund more research on this connection
🗣️ Raise awareness to end stigma
👩⚕️ Train eye health workers to spot emotional distress
🤝 Integrate mental health support into eye health services
Together, we can build eye care that truly sees the whole person – body, mind and community. 💙
