SCAD is proud to be represented at the launch of the Kenya To***co Industry Interference Index Report convened by

The findings reveal a concerning trend. Kenya now ranks 19th out of 100 countries in the 2025 Global To***co Industry Interference Index, scoring 46—up from 40 in 2020. This places Kenya 6th out of 20 African countries, signaling moderate to high levels of to***co industry interference.

📈 The rising score reflects growing industry influence through tactics such as lobbying against stronger health warnings, pushing for lenient regulatory timelines, and alleged corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities that blur the line between public health and corporate interests.

⚠️ The report also highlights critical governance gaps, including conflicts of interest, weak disclosure mechanisms, and insufficient monitoring of interactions between government officials and the to***co industry. These gaps undermine efforts to fully protect public health policies from vested commercial interests.

As youth advocates, SCAD remains committed to strengthening transparency, accountability, and the full implementation of Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on To***co Control, which requires governments to protect health policies from to***co industry interference.

Public health must always come before profits.

To***co kills thousands of Kenyans every year and costs the country billions in healthcare and lost productivity.

This is more than a health issue, it is a major economic burden affecting families, communities, and national development.

Every year, lives are lost, families are affected, and the country spends billions managing diseases caused by to***co use.

When the to***co industry interferes with public health policies, it weakens efforts to protect people and reduce these harms.

Kenya must ensure that public health decisions remain free from to***co industry influence and prioritize the well-being of its citizens.

Protect our future.

The momentum of continues — and today, prevention met purpose at Kangemi Vocational Training Centre.

SCAD was proud to join hands with Nairobi County Social Services and Reform Uishi Poa for a powerful youth sensitization forum focused on drug use prevention and building resilience among young people.

In a community where opportunity and vulnerability often exist side by side, conversations like these matter. We engaged young people aged 18–24 in honest dialogue about the risk factors that increase drug use, from peer pressure and unemployment to stress and limited opportunities, while also highlighting the protective factors that strengthen them: life skills, mentorship, supportive environments, and clear goals for the future.

At Kangemi VTC, we witnessed courage in conversation, curiosity in learning, and commitment to positive choices. This is how change begins, not just through policies, but through people.

We are building and creating pathways toward , one conversation, one skill, one young person at a time.

From February 9th to 13th, 2026, we're coming together for National Prevention Week to champion a future free from the harms of alcohol and drug abuse. This isn't just a campaign; it's a nationwide call to action to empower every corner of our society to foster healthier, safer communities.

The statistics on substance abuse are sobering, impacting individuals, families, and our collective progress. But here’s the powerful truth: prevention works. By focusing on proactive strategies, education, and early intervention, we can significantly reduce the rates of substance use, protect our youth, and support those on the path to recovery. National Prevention Week is dedicated to showcasing how collective effort in prevention leads to for everyone.

This year, we're focusing on four crucial thematic areas:

1. Schools: Nurturing Healthy Futures 📚 Schools are frontlines for prevention. We’ll be highlighting how educators, administrators, and students can create supportive environments that deter substance use, promote life skills, and ensure learners feel safe to seek help. Investing in school-based prevention protects developing minds and academic achievements.

2. Families: The First Line of Defense 🏡 Families play an irreplaceable role in shaping attitudes and behaviors towards substances. We’ll provide resources and insights into effective communication, parental guidance, and creating resilient family units that foster healthy choices and provide unwavering support.

3. Workplaces: Promoting Well-being & Productivity 💼 A healthy workforce is a productive workforce. This theme focuses on how employers can establish drug-free policies, offer employee assistance programs, and cultivate cultures that prioritize well-being, mental health, and support for employees in recovery.

4. Community & Recovery: Building Supportive Networks 🌍 Prevention is a community effort. We'll explore how local initiatives, community leaders, and recovery programs collectively build robust networks of support. From public awareness campaigns to accessible recovery services, this theme emphasizes that no one should walk their journey alone.

SCAD was honored to join our coalition partners in a multi-stakeholder discussion convened by the National Taxpayers Association , focusing on strengthening the monitoring and implementation of the To***co Control Fund and Solatium Fund under Kenya’s To***co Control Act (2007).

This engagement brought together civil society organizations , , .inc , government agencies, and public health advocates united in ensuring that earmarked health funds truly serve their purpose — protecting Kenyans from to***co-related harm.

We reiterate the collective call for stronger transparency, governance, and accountability mechanisms to ensure to***co industry levies are fully directed toward cessation support, research, policy enforcement, and reducing NCD burden in our communities.

Prevention saves lives and money."
Dr. Kevin Sabet reminds us that the world is facing an unprecedented drug crisis and addiction is modern-day slavery. He emphasizes that punishment is not a solution, but prevention and compassion are. Legalization, he warns, only invites criminals while leaving the vulnerable even more exposed. True investment means supporting people, communities, and events like this that strengthen prevention.
“Meet people where they’re at, but don’t leave them there.”

We need to go beyond addiction."
Dr. Rodgers Kasirye reminds us that vulnerability isn’t the problem, the real issue lies in poverty, unemployment, and inequality. He calls for greater investment in prevention, stronger life skills programs, and aligning our efforts with young people’s realities which will help the global south go beyond addiction. To reduce drug demand, we must treat it as a developmental challenge, not just a health one while focusing on the root cause of the problem.
