The Beauty and Value of Your Memories - Day #201

Hanging on to the memories is, at first, almost too much to bear. The pain of remembering is too intense, the absence of your loved one too large. But please, don’t push them away.

Just let them alone, for a while. When you’re ready, these memories will be so valuable to you - like precious gems. Take them out, and enjoy them - not just on the anniversaries, and birthdays, but every day. Your heart is large enough to carry them, I guarantee it.

Quotation for the Day

“What is there to do when people die – people so dear and rare – but bring them back by remembering?” - May Sarton

Love Enriches, Transforms Darkness to Light

When your grief is new, all you can feel is the emptiness; the missing, the wanting, and the needing to see them one more time. There is truly a vacuum in your heart and life; a deeply empty space, and you’re sure nothing will ever fill the void.

And, for a long time, nothing does. In fact, I don’t think it’s a process of filling the space, but rather one where the space shrinks ever smaller. It doesn’t go away all together, but it will become smaller through time.

Sometimes, people fill that space with someone or something else. Don’t be hesitant to listen to the inner voice which tells you to reach out, and fill that space – with love. Love heals, love enriches, and transforms darkness into light.

“The problem with death is absence.” - Roger Rosenblatt

Use Your Enormous Capacity for Love and Empathy

Reaching out to those in need with love can be the best way to heal the wound of grief. It’s your capacity to love that is your saving grace - it’s a divine gift, meant to be shared.

For a small gesture, you can touch one's life in a way they will never forget.

Look for opportunities to make a difference in someone else’s life today - and act on at least one. You will sleep better tonight, knowing you did…and you may be privileged to experience a transformational moment.

Quotation for the Day

“I am slowly, painfully discovering that my refuge is not found in my mother, or my grandmother, or even the birds of Bear River. My refuge exists in my capacity to love.” - Terry T. Williams

Solidarity with All Humanity - Forgive and Love

Literally everyone has lost, or will lose, someone they love. Pets, friends, places, and stages of our lives; the very act of living incurs loss. When you realize that everyone – since the earliest cave dwellers, including the rich, the famous, the powerful; beautiful, witty and the creative – every soul who ever walked the Earth has endured what you’re going through now.

The sense of solidarity which comes with the recognition of this fact is so powerful. The fine gifts of understanding, empathy and love are rich rewards for the sufferings of grief.

No matter the color of our skin, the country of our birth, we are all one humanity. For that, I am deeply grateful.

Quotation for the Day

“After the dead are buried, after the physical pain of grief has become a permanent wound in the soul, then comes the transcendent and common bond of human suffering, and with that comes forgiveness, and with forgiveness comes love.” - Andre Dubus

Looking to the Future

The journey of grief is one that you must ultimately decide to complete. You cannot remain where you are right now. After all, time moves forward, and so must you.

There will come a day when you won’t feel as you do right now. I promise. Knowing that may bring some relief.

Quotation for the Day

“You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from building nests in your hair.” - Chinese Proverb

Recognize Grief as a Journey

If you want to heal from grief, you must go through it; you cannot go around it. The grieving process is a healing process. Do not look at healing as a goal you can only attain at the end of the process. Each step you take is part of your healing.

Take a moment to try and identify where you are on your grief journey. If you have admitted you are grieving, then your journey truly has begun. Are you freshly on the path? Or have you been ‘walking the path” for months now?

"Determination, patience and courage are the only things needed to improve any situation." - Anonymous

Be Positive - Alive

I know that “being positive” feels impossible– and I’m sure you’re wondering how you can do that when you are grieving deeply.

However, as we plan our daily activities, even the simplest one, it’s possible to put a “positive” spin on it. That brighter outlook, that positivity expands in a positive direction – leading more swiftly to increased joy and recovery from loss.

Here’s a positive thought for you to carry into your day: You’re alive, and as long as you are, the memory of your loved one has a life of its own, within your heart and mind.

Quotation for the Day

“What happened yesterday is history. What happens tomorrow is a mystery. What we do today makes a difference - the precious present moment.” - Nick Saban

Courage - 'Being worried but going on anyhow'

What you’re going through now takes courage, too; sometimes it’s hard just to get out of bed and face a new day. And, even more so, it’s an act of courage to go to bed, where the dark and the solitude conspire against an easy sleep.

Somehow though, you do it; maybe you do it for your children, or grandchildren. Maybe you simply can’t face not doing it.

Alan Cohen wrote, “It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new.” Could that be why we cling to the known, as we sail through the turbulent waters of grieving? But, let’s be honest; nothing will ever be the same; the known is gone forever. You’re sailing to new shores, and a new existence.

Ever onward.

Quotation of the Day

“Courage is being afraid but going on anyhow.” ~Dan Rather

Let Hope Heal - To KDF Fraternity, Families, Friends and Kenyans at large

Some are able to release grief far more quickly than others. However long it takes, it is always the re-connection with the power of the heart that moves you past grief. When the heart is enlivened again, it feels like the sun coming out after a week of rainy days. There is hope in the heart that chases the clouds away. Hope is a higher heart frequency and as you begin to reconnect with your heart, hope is waiting to show you new possibilities and arrest the downward spiral of grief and loneliness. It becomes a matter of how soon you want the sun to shine. Listening to the still, small voice in your heart will make hope into a reality.

If you find yourself in a place of heightened awareness, where sounds are heard more acutely, colors seem brighter, and you’re more sensitive to light and cold – don’t despair. Instead, rest; close your eyes, and go inward for awhile.

This too, shall pass.

And, as Timothy Leary noted, there are significant benefits to walking in the realm of non-ordinary reality.

Quotation of the Day

“In the night of death, hope sees a star, and listening love can hear the rustle of a wing.” ~Robert Ingersoll

Love is Always Stronger - We Send Love to KDF Heroes

So, you took the risk, and fell in love. I’m not even talking romantic love between a man and a woman; I could be talking about the first time you saw your son’s face, or when you found the perfect puppy at the local shelter.

And, believe me, it’s immortal. Even after loss, that love continues. In fact, I think it magnifies over time.

Quotation of the Day

“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge - myth is more potent than history - dreams are more powerful than facts - hope always triumphs over experience - laughter is the cure for grief - love is stronger than death.” ~Robert Fulghum

Our Prayers to KDF, the families and friends of our fallen Heroes. Our love for you is Immortal. May God grant you Strength and perseverance to deal with the loss.
