𧬠SICKLE CELL GENOTYPING
Why knowing your genotype matters
Sickle cell genotyping identifies the type of hemoglobin you carry and helps determine whether you are normal, a carrier, or affected by sickle cell disease.
Who should test:
β’ Couples planning marriage or pregnancy
β’ Pregnant women and newborns
β’ Individuals with unexplained anemia or recurrent pain
β’ Anyone with a family history of sickle cell disease
Tests used:
β’ Hemoglobin genotype (AA, AS, SS, AC, SC)
β’ Hemoglobin electrophoresis or HPLC
β’ Sickle cell screening test
Why it matters:
When both parents carry the sickle cell trait, each pregnancy has a 25% chance of producing a child with sickle cell disease.
Informed decisions:
Test early β Understand your results β Seek genetic counseling
Key message:
Knowing your genotype supports informed family planning and better long-term health decisions.
