Empowering Future Medics: MKU Students Explore Spinal Rehabilitation at NSIRH

Today, Clinical Medicine and Surgery students from Mount Kenya University (MKU) visited the National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH) for an academic trip.

They were warmly welcomed by Dr. Carole Okoth, Physician, who shared an overview of NSIRH as the only public hospital offering specialized healthcare services to persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI) in Kenya, East, and Central Africa.

The students attended an insightful session led by the Multidisciplinary Team, covering key areas including Medical Management, Nursing Care, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychological Support, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Orthopedic Technology, Orthopedic Trauma, and Laboratory Services—all focused on Spine Rehabilitation and the Multidisciplinary Approach.

They learned about the proper management of spinal injury patients, prevention of complications, the impact of road traffic accidents in causing spinal injuries, and the importance of early referral before complications arise.

The visit concluded with a guided hospital tour led by Expert Physiotherapist, John Luchwala Masinde.
