International Day of Persons with Disabilities Celebrated in Turkana County.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities today was celebrated in Turkana County at the Moi Gardens Stadium, marking a significant stepforward in achieving greater inclusivity. The event was a collaborative effort, organized by the Council in partnership with the County Government of Turkana and various other stakeholders.
This year's theme, โFostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,โ underscored the achievements made in integrating disability inclusion, particularly through the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Representing the Council, Director Freddah Lenaiyasa reaffirmed the Council's dedication to ensuring disability inclusion. This commitment involves strategic partnerships and the diligent implementation of government policies designed to promote the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
The national commitment was highlighted by the representative of the Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, Mr. Nicholas Kitua. He reiterated the government's promise to maintain inclusive government programs by implementing the Disability Act of 2025.
Governor Hon. Jeremiah Lomorukai, Napotikan in his speech, promised to incorporate persons with disabilities into all county government programs to ensure they receive essential support. The Governor also announced the passing of a disability fund and affirmed that persons with disabilities would continue to benefit from free medical assessment for all persons with disabilities seeking registration within Turkana County.
The celebrations was also attended and supported by key development partners, including UNICEF, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), UNDPK, KISE, CBM, and the World Food Programme (WFP), alongside other important stakeholders, emphasizing the broad community dedication to disability inclusion.
