As counsellors, therapists, and helping professionals, we often encourage our clients to pause, reflect, and realign. But how often do we make space to practice this ourselves?

Here are moments when restructuring may be calling for your attention:

+ When you receive new information that could enhance your service delivery.
+ When certain processes could be optimised for efficiency.
+ When you want to deepen client engagement or improve outcomes.
+ When life transitions invite you to realign professionally.

Why it matters:
+ To make your practice more sustainable in time, money, and energy.
+ For better work–life balance.
+ For renewed confidence and clarity.
+ To improve the quality and impact of your service.

How to approach it?
+ Research and reflect often.
+ Take gradual, intentional steps.
+ Seek feedback from trusted colleagues and clients.
+ Communicate openly with your stakeholders.

Growth doesn’t always look like expansion. Sometimes, it’s restructuring with purpose.

SCV within EFCT

As November shines a light on domestic and partner violence,
we pause to reflect on how therapeutic approaches like Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) can help us understand and safely work with such complex dynamics.

From an EFCT lens, situational couple violence (SCV) isn’t seen simply as aggression or pathology. It’s understood as a distress signal, a reactive attempt to regulate fear, loss, or disconnection within the attachment bond.

But not all violence speaks the same emotional language.
While SCV often arises from reactive emotional cycles and can sometimes be addressed safely within EFCT, intimate terrorism (IT) is different.

Intimate Terrorism is rooted in power and control. One partner uses fear and coercion to dominate the other. In such cases, safety and protection must come first.

Your Digital Personal Portal

The step to seek a counsellor is a brave and precious one. We know it often comes after deep reflection, hesitation and it takes courage. We want to honour that by making every step a little easier for you.

At Vizazi, we’re embracing digital bookings to make therapy more accessible and flexible for our clients.

Through our secure electronic platform Jane, you can now (re)schedule your sessions, receive reminders, access your documents and download receipts — anytime, anywhere. Or you can pencil yourself into our wait list.

All within a private space where you are the designer of your own counselling journey.

There were countless moments in the last 20 years that I felt overwhelmed by how to navigate intensity and create value as part of family and couples' dynamics.

Leaning into a theoretical framework backed up by scientific research gave me calmness and confidence in these moments.

It seems hard but it is proven that this step, this part, this (micro) intervention is part of the process.

And therefore, I can keep my focus, stay grounded and keep on going ... For you as my clients.

A counsellor's reflection.

Calling all MFT's across Africa!

A new study is exploring the current state of systemic and relational therapy on the continent — from practice settings and challenges to professional needs and opportunities for growth.

Led by Dr. Ronald Asimwe (Uganda/USA), Dr. Rosco Kasujja (Uganda), Dr. Elmien Lesch (South Africa) and Dr. Michelle Karume (Kenya).

This study aims to inform future training, research and policy efforts in Africa’s mental health landscape.

Can a therapy model born in the West truly serve African couples?

The study by R. Asiimwe, E. Lesch, C. Kosgey & N. Akinyi asked Kenyan mental health professionals how EFT feels in practice.

To some, there’s a need to move slowly. ‘Emotional expression isn’t always safe or natural here.’ Build emotional safety first.

To others, the answer is yes, ‘but only if we make it ours.' Use cultural metaphors. Integrate faith and body practices.

EFT’s focus on emotional connection is universal, yet how we express those emotions is deeply cultural.

This research reminds us - healing happens when culture and science meet with respect.

How might therapy look if it spoke our language culturally and emotionally? Let’s reflect.

Research Mental Health l East Africa

For many practitioners like Aldo Oluoch, Kagendo Munene and Mwangi Nderitu, research is more than theory, it’s a compass.

It helps them make sense of emerging trends, design evidence-based approaches and stay responsive to clients’ unique realities.

It also grounds their work in clinical expertise while encouraging continuous learning, critical thinking and adaptation to evolving needs.

At Vizazi, we believe research bridges knowledge and practice, allowing counsellors to support individuals and communities with both compassion and precision.

Mental Health & Research

For mental health practitioners, research is more than just data: it’s the bridge between understanding, diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental health conditions.

Yet, gaps remain: from limited diversity in studies, to a lack of culturally adapted tools, to the slow translation of findings into real-world practice.

Let's unpack key insights, challenges, and opportunities in mental health research, especially in African contexts and what they mean for practitioners on the ground.

Because when research informs practice, care becomes more effective, inclusive, and transformative.

V-connect Meet-up 2025

Early last month, we were honoured to host the first V-connect Meet-up, bringing together professionals in counselling and psychology who we've had the privilege of working with since 2020 through the KuZa training and V-connect mentorship programs.

The meet-up provided a warm and supportive space where practitioners could network, celebrate themselves and reflect on their aspirations for the future. These personal stories set the tone for deeper conversations around the evolving landscape of mental health practice and the unique opportunities and challenges facing the profession.

By reflecting on both individual journeys and shared experiences, the group was able to nurture a stronger sense of community and professional identity.

It was truly a day of connection, learning, and reflection and as the day closed, one key thing stood out: the value of coming together, sharing openly, and building a community that supports growth, resilience, and has a common vision when it comes to mental health.

We are constantly challenged by the different cultural contexts our clients bring into the counselling room.

For some of us, the urge to lean on our competency and expertise overrides the opportunity to be humble and learn alongside our clients.

For others, sensitivity without depth can slip into assumptions, leaving our responses shallow rather than truly attuned.

In these moments, cultural humility opens the door for authentic connection and respect. Why? Because clients are the experts of their own lived experience.

Without humility, knowledge risks becoming prescriptive and sensitivity risks being superficial. But with humility, we position ourselves as learners alongside our clients, allowing trust, respect, and genuine therapeutic alliance to grow.
