Is It Time for a Spine MRI?

Back or neck pain can be worrying, especially when it doesn’t go away. In most cases, pain improves with rest, physiotherapy, and proper care. However, if the pain keeps coming back, lasts several weeks, or is accompanied by symptoms like numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain spreading to the arms or legs, it may be time to look deeper. An MRI helps doctors understand what’s happening around the nerves and spine, especially after injury or when everyday activities become difficult. The goal isn’t just to do a scan, but to find answers that guide the right treatment and help you recover safely.

Concussion in sports : The injury you cannot see but should never be ignored 🚩🚩

The match is intense, with both teams pressing hard. In the 62nd minute, a midfielder jumps to contest an aerial ball. There is a sudden collision of heads. She lands on the pitch and remains still for a few seconds.

The referee stops play immediately.

As the medical team rushes in, the player sits up slowly. She looks alert but slightly confused. When asked where she is, she hesitates before answering. She reports a headache, dizziness, and says the stadium lights feel “too bright.”

The decision is made quickly ,she is removed from play.

On the sideline, a brief concussion assessment is done. Her balance is unsteady, and she struggles to recall the score of the match. Although she wants to return, the medical team explains that player safety comes first.

She is taken to the dressing room for monitoring. Over the next 30 minutes, her symptoms persist: headache, nausea, and difficulty concentrating. She is advised to rest, avoid screens, and is placed under observation.

Later that evening, she is reviewed again. There is no loss of consciousness, but the diagnosis is clear: sports-related concussion.

She does not return to training the next day.

Instead, she begins a step-by-step recovery plan, starting with complete physical and cognitive rest. Only after her symptoms fully resolve and medical clearance is given will she return to play.

The match continues but the most important win that day is protecting an athlete’s brain and future.

🛑 Key rule:
If concussion is suspected, the athlete must be removed from play immediately and assessed by a medical professional.

⏳ Recovery matters:
Returning too soon increases the risk of further injury. Athletes should follow a gradual, medically guided return-to-play protocol only after symptoms fully resolve.

🧠 When it comes to concussion, safety comes first.
Early recognition and proper management protect both performance and long-term brain health.

Common Sports Injuries and How to Avoid Them

Sports are great for fitness and wellbeing but injuries are common most of which can be prevented with proper preparation. The most frequent injuries include sprains and strains, caused by overstretching ligaments or muscles; knee injuries such as ACL tears and meniscus damage; shin splints from overtraining or improper footwear; tennis/golfer’s elbow from repetitive arm movements; shoulder injuries like rotator cuff strains; and fractures or dislocations, especially in high-impact sports.

Prevention focuses on warming up, gradual training progression, strengthening key muscle groups, using proper technique, and wearing appropriate gear. Athletes should also listen to their bodies, avoid overtraining, and prioritize recovery. With smart habits and good body awareness, most sports injuries can be avoided, allowing athletes to stay active and perform safely.

The hidden cause of persistent groin pain in athletes.

Persistent groin pain is often misdiagnosed as a simple muscle strain for many athletes especially footballers and runners. Groin pain can be a sign of deeper issues such as osteitis p***s, adductor tendinopathy, hip impingement, abdominal wall weakness, or even referred pain from the lower back.

These hidden causes often go untreated because the symptoms overlap and athletes continue training through discomfort.

👉 If your groin pain has lasted more than 10–14 days, keeps returning or worsens with sprinting, turning, or kicking… it’s time for a proper assessment because Early diagnosis = faster recovery + fewer re-injuries.

Unlock your ankles to reduce knee, hip and back pain

It is easy to overlook how much your ankles contribute to movement until you experience an injury. When the ankles become stiff, they disrupt the body’s natural alignment and movement patterns. Since the ankles form the base of support, limited motion there can affect joints higher up the body, particularly the knees, hips, and spine.

For more that 15 years of working with athletes, I’ve observed how reduced ankle flexibility can lead to balance issues, tight hips, back pain, and even poor posture. Many people try to stretch or loosen tight areas without realizing that their problems actually begin at the ankle. Improving ankle mobility often helps release tension throughout the body and restores smoother, pain-free movement.

Why ankle mobility is key for total-body motion
Every time you walk, run, jump, or squat, your ankles move to allow your knees and hips to shift correctly. When that flexibility is limited, the body compensates in other ways. You might notice your heels lifting during squats, your knees collapsing inward, or your toes pointing outward when you move.

These adjustments may seem small, but over time, they change how your joints absorb and transfer force, leading to strain and discomfort in the lower body and back. The ankle is the first link in your body’s movement chain , if it’s stiff, the rest of the chain is forced to adapt in inefficient and sometimes painful ways.

🔄 Referred Pain: A Hidden Cause of Back Pain
Did you know that sometimes back pain doesn’t originate from your back at all?

This is called referred pain, when pain is felt in one part of the body but comes from another source.

💡 How it Happens:
Your body’s nerves are all connected through the spinal cord. When an organ or structure sends pain signals, the brain can misinterpret their origin. As a result, pain from internal organs, joints, or nerves may be "felt" in the back.

🧠 Common Sources of Referred Back Pain:
🔹 Kidney problems → pain in the lower back or flanks
🔹 Pelvic or abdominal issues (e.g., endometriosis, fibroids)
🔹 Hip joint dysfunction → felt as lower back pain
🔹 Pancreas or gallbladder issues → can refer to mid or upper back
🔹 Nerve impingement (e.g., sciatic nerve) → radiating pain from buttock to leg

It is advisable to see a medical professional for a proper medical examination and the correct management

At Immediate Care Sports Clinic, our team focuses on a comprehensive medical examination, not just where it hurts, to uncover the true cause of your pain.
