Do NUTRIENTS play a part in STRESS MANAGEMENT?The answer is YES. A nutritious, well balanced diet has powerful stress reducing benefits that improve brain functioning, shore up immune function, lower blood pressure, improve the circulation, and reduce toxins from the body.

Some specific nutrients play an important role in reducing the stress causing hormone (cortisol) and adrenaline. The irony of stress is that people suffering stress need a more nutritionally dense diet but often opt for comfort foods (like sugary and fatty foods) lacking in the necessary nutrients, consequently inducing a situation of nutrient depletion that further compromises the metabolic systems.

A healthy diet can help counter the impact of stress by shoring up the immune system and lowering blood pressure. Few stress busting foods are as follows:

1. Oranges
2. Spinach
3. Chocolate (dark)
4. Banana
5. Walnuts
6. Flax seeds
7. Whole grains

What is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD?
This is the back flow of stomach contents into the esophagus.

What are the symptoms of GERD?
The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn. Other symptoms include sour taste with acid regurgitation, belching and bloating.

What is the dietary recommendation for management of GERD?
Limit high fat food e.g fries, cream, ice cream etc.
Limit chocolate and coffee.
Limit or avoid alcohol, mint, tomatoes and carbonated drinks.

What is the recommended lifestyle modification?
Maintain an upright posture during meals for 45 - 60 minutes after meals.
Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight (BMI of 18.5 - 24.9).
Elevate the head of the bed for about 6 inch when sleeping.
Stop smoking.
Avoid eating within 2-3 hours of bedtime.
Avoid clothing that is tight around the stomach area.
