DIABETES TYPE1
Currently there is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes, but ongoing studies are exploring ways to prevent diabetes in those who are most likely to get it. People who have a parent, brother, or sister with type 1 diabetes and are willing to participate in one of these studies should talk with

Preventing diabetes complications
People who have type 1 diabetes can help prevent or delay the development of complications by keeping their blood sugar in a target range. They also need regular medical checkups to detect early signs of complications. If complications are treated early, the damage may be stopped, slowed, or possibly reversed.
People who have other health problems along with diabetes, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, need to treat those conditions. Also, not smoking can reduce the risk of complications. Having other health problems can increase the risk for complications from diabetes.

Did you know a lifestyle condition known as cardiometabolic disease; the condition comprises a range of different diseases that fail the body's systems resulting to disability and death.
These conditions include:
1. Heart diseases e.g hypertension
2. Diabetes mellitus I.e uncontrolled body glucose
3. Obesity I.e body mass index(weight divided by height squared) > 30
4. Hyperlipidemia I.e a state where the body's cholesterol is higher than the normal levels
5. Arthritis. Refers to inflammatory process of the joints resulting to pain, deformity and disuse.
A person having more than 2 of the above conditions is considered to be having cardiometabolic disease.
It's advisable for persons living with hypertension and diabetes to ensure that their blood pressure and blood glucose are within the normal standardized ranges, check their cholesterol levels every 3-6 months, have their kidneys function evaluated and an eye check up every year, and to have a credible healthcare for follow up and plan for your health.

Diabetic Diet Sample Meal And Food

The ideal diabetic meal will consist of a combination of foods. Some foods cross categories, like bread products that are high in fat, dairy items that provide protein, and starchy vegetables. Our needs will vary depending on the time of day and how much physical activity we engage in. Following is a sample diabetic diet meal :

One serving of protein (3 oz of chicken, lean beef or fish)
One serving of bread (whole grain roll, tortilla or ½ cup pasta)
One serving of dairy (cheese, milk or low-fat sour cream)
One serving vegetables (fist sized portion or a small bowl of salad)
One serving fruit (tennis ball sized or ½ cup sliced)
Small amounts of unsaturated fats are needed, so add a little dressing or a pat of soft margarine. Avoid sweets; consider the fruit your dessert!

Foods that should be avoided include; fatty red meat, organ meat, highly processed food, fried food, fast food, high cholesterol food and foods rich in saturated fat.

TESTS THAT PATIENTS ARE NEVER TOLD ABOUT
1.A1C
What is the A1C test?

The A1C test, also called the hemoglobin A1C test, HbA1C, or glycohemoglobin test, is a blood test that reflects the average level of glucose in your blood during the past 3 months. Your A1C test result is given in percents. Your clinician might use the A1C test to help diagnose your diabetes. Your doctor will draw a sample of your blood in the office or send you to a lab to have a sample of your blood drawn for the test. After being diagnosed with diabetes, you should have the A1C test at least twice a year.

Your A1C result plus your record of blood glucose numbers show whether your blood glucose is under control.

If your A1C result is too high, you may need to change your diabetes care plan. Your health care team can help you decide what part of your plan to change. For instance, you might need to change your meal plan, your diabetes medicines, or your physical activity plan.
If your A1C result is on target, then your diabetes treatment plan is working. The lower your A1C is, the lower your chance of having diabetes problems.........monitor your blood glucose levels , use the right glucometers........contact PHLS

COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES

DKA (Ketoacidosis) & Ketones

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious condition that can lead to diabetic coma (passing out for a long time) or even death.

When your cells don't get the glucose they need for energy, your body begins to burn fat for energy, which produces ketones. Ketones are chemicals that the body creates when it breaks down fat to use for energy. The body does this when it doesn’t have enough insulin to use glucose, the body’s normal source of energy. When ketones build up in the blood, they make it more acidic. They are a warning sign that your diabetes is out of control or that you are getting sick.

High levels of ketones can poison the body. When levels get too high, you can develop DKA. DKA may happen to anyone with diabetes, though it is rare in people with type 2.

Treatment for DKA usually takes place in the hospital. But you can help prevent it by learning the warning signs and checking your urine and blood regularly.
