This can only be accomplished by implementing various climate-smart and resilient technologies, innovations, and management practices.

Aquaponics technology, for example, allows the production of fish, vegetables, fruits, and other highly nutritious products from a single unit.
Talk about getting more crop per drop! An ideal technology for our country's ASAL regions.

From the laboratories to the communities.

Citizen science is a new way of conducting research that involves members of the community. It is no longer about data collection; it is co-creation. This is the Bottom-Up research method! This is the only way for research projects to have a real impact on local communities.
Having said that, allow me to pose a few questions:

Did you know that finger millet is high in carbohydrates, zinc, calcium, proteins, phosphorus, and other minerals that are good for your body? This is especially important for children and the elderly in the community.
So now you know!

And did you know that, in addition to ugali and porridge, finger millets can be used to make value-added products such as finger millet cakes, onion bites, chapatis, mandazis, and biscuits?

Dr Cheserek led the research team that trained and sensitized community members in Bomet County over the last week.

In the development and sensory evaluation of the aforementioned Finger millet value-added products, the team collaborated with mostly elderly and vulnerable women from Konoin and Sotik Sub-Counties.

It's festive season. Do not consume mouldy foods.

Mouldy foods will most certainly contain aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a very dangerous metabolite of Aspergillus spp fungi. Aspergillus B1 is carcinogenic, mutagenic and can seep through the skin. Lethal dose (LD50) of Aflatoxin is anywhere between 0.5-10 mg/kg depending on several factors including genetics, physiological condition and age of the victim. Children exposed to aflatoxin tend to be stunted, re****ed and sickly if they do not die. Pregnant mothers exposed to aflatoxin can give birth to babies with defects. Even though the liver can break down aflatoxin, sustained exposure will lead to liver cirrhosis and/or liver cancer. When the liver breaks down aflatoxin, two products are possible; aflatoxicol and epoxide. Aflatoxicol is less potent and the body will et rid of it pretty quick. Epoxide on the other hand is a mutagenic substance that can interfere with the DNA to induce cancerous tumors and other unimaginable consequences of gene malfunctions.
