Every day in Africa, women and girls risk their lives because safe abortion remains out of reach.
Unsafe abortion is one of the leading causes of maternal deaths in Africa, with 8.3 million women and girls undergoing unsafe abortions each year, yet it is preventable.
According to the latest African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) Kenya Abortion Study, there were about 792,694 induced abortions in 2023. And here’s the surprise, most of them were married women, not just teenagers or single girls as many would think.
Unsafe abortion is therefore not just ‘someone else’s problem’ it is happening in our homes, our families, our communities.
On this , RHNK joins fellow African Civil Society Organizations in affirming that safe abortion is life-saving healthcare and a fundamental human right. No woman, girl or gender-diverse person should face stigma, criminalization or death when seeking essential care.
We call on governments to remove the legal, policy and social barriers that deny women and girls their right to health and dignity
