Fragmented diagnostic pathways, delayed results, and limited access to high-performance tests like HPV DNA testing make it challenging for gynaecologists to deliver proper care for cervical cancer patients.

At The Pathology Network, we are addressing these systemic barriers head-on, by equipping gynaecologists with our Spes360 platform.

Here's how gynaecologists within our network are using it to transform cervical cancer detection:
1. Access to high-performance HPV DNA Testing, where it's needed most.
2. Full coordination of the diagnostic journey, from sample collection to result delivery, with guaranteed turnaround times.
3. Guaranteed Quality Assurance: Standardised protocols, external quality assurance programmes, and 24-hour turnaround for HPV DNA testing-eliminating prolonged or uncertain result delays.

Our ambition is clear: no woman should die of preventable cervical cancer.

Across the continent, countless patients face a frustrating reality: the diagnostic tests that could identify their condition simply aren't accessible when they need them most.

Our founder, Dr. Joshua Kibera, was recently hosted by Paul Essery on the Chief Uncensored podcast to discuss how African-led tech innovations are changing this reality.

Their candid conversation explores our mission: supporting healthcare systems across the continent so that everybody can get the diagnostic test they need, when they need it.

Cervical cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths among women in 21 of the 48 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Globally, the burden of cervical cancer is borne by women in low-to middle-income countries.

Yet, it is highly preventable, and studies show that providing access to screening can reduce a woman's risk of contracting the disease by up to 50%.

At The Pathology Network, we believe a world without cervical cancer is possible. That's why we are:

- Developing health infrastructure, processes and systems to make cervical cancer screening and diagnosis scalable and accessible.
- Empowering clinicians and patients with information about HPV and cervical cancer.
- Collaborating with strategic partners and members of the cervical cancer community.
- Broadening access to personalised HPV screening by connecting women with gynaecologists.

Eleven years ago, our founder, Dr Joshua Kibera, met Martha while running a clinic in a rural Kenyan hospital. Martha was a 45-year-old farmer with an ulcerated lump the size of a tennis ball in her left breast. At the time of her visit, her lump had grown to stage 4 breast cancer.

Martha had done everything right, but had been failed by a fragmented diagnostic infrastructure. Her tragic story consequently shaped our purpose: to ensure that no cancer patient is ever lost in the system due to inefficiencies and miscommunication.

This World Cancer Day, we're reminded that closing the cancer care gap must start with diagnosis. At The Pathology Network, we're building Africa's first diagnostic grid to ensure no cancer patient is ever lost in the system again.

When Time Becomes Hope: Reimagining Diagnostics in Africa

At The Pathology Network (TPN), we exist to do good by making timely, reliable diagnostics accessible across Africa.

We believe every minute matters. Diagnostics must work seamlessly, across hospitals, laboratories and pathologists, so that clinicians can make informed decisions and patients can receive the right care, at the right time.

Yet across much of Africa, diagnostics remain fragmented. A shortage of pathologists, coupled with weak coordination, communication gaps, and limited standardisation, often leads to delays that directly affect patient outcomes.

One of our partner hospitals, Cottolengo Mission Hospital in rural Kenya, shared a case that reflects why this work matters.

A young boy from a disadvantaged background who lived with his grandmother, arrived at Cottolengo Mission Hospital with a rare bone cancer. He was critically ill and required multiple specialised diagnostic tests within a very short window to determine viable treatment options. "This child was almost dying," recalls Eric Muthomi, the hospital's Assistant Medical Director.

Before Cottolengo was onboarded onto TPN's diagnostic coordination network, such cases often took weeks, sometimes over a month, to resolve diagnostically. With our diagnostic network, the hospital received results in days, not weeks.

Time became hope. The confirmed diagnosis made it possible for the child to be transferred to Italy, for a life-saving bone transplant. Today, he is thriving.

"No one knew it could be possible," Eric says. "Even some of the consultants here had expressed their doubt."

This is why we do what we do.

By connecting mission hospitals like Cottolengo to a coordinated diagnostic ecosystem, we're not just improving turnaround times. We are transforming what is possible for patient care across Africa.

Today, we stand together with partners, communities, and medical organisations worldwide to commemorate this year's World AIDS Day.

This year's theme, "Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response", reminds us of the importance of sustained global collaboration in addressing one of the most significant health challenges of our time.

It also reminds us of the need to choose kindness and compassion over fear and stigma, to educate communities on the importance of early testing, and to strengthen access to healthcare.
