A Wild Story.
Last year, a rescued lion cub estimated to be 2-3months old was presented to the clinic with a history of lethargy and anorexia. She was not in a good way, her stomach was distended and the abdominal xrays showed something pretty dense in her stomach that was causing an obstruction on the contrast xrays despite the diet of mince meat mixed with lactose free milk. Surgery was risky given the state that she was in and she was admitted on fluids and intensive treatment to try and stabilize her. Nothing was working and she continued to deteriorate and even started showing neurological signs with seizures and muscle tremors. The situation was dire, and with no other options, Dr. Moses was given consent to try the surgery in a desperate attempt to save her life. There was a strong chance she wasn't going to be strong enough to survive the anaethesia.
The little cub was prepped for surgery and a gastrotomy operation was performed. Dr. Moses removed an entire chewed up football from her stomach.
The patient made it out of surgery and continued to receive treatment and nutrition following the operation.
She turned around and started feeding and was later discharged with instructions to remove all toys such as footballs from her space!
She is now doing better and has started gaining some weight.
What a football story!

Eye ulcers left untreated can deteriorate very fast even in just 12 hours. But with thorough and speedy treatment they can heal extrodinarily fast- these two photos are only two days apart.
Moral of the story- any swollen or painful eye requires a veterinary examination. Don't let it wait and don't try and open a painful eye yourself- pressure on the eye could cause further damage. Treatment is directed at identifying and rectifying any underlying cause of ulceration, controlling infection and inflammation as well as promoting healing.

There has been a recent increase in rabies cases country wide.

LAIKIPIA- We have had one suspected case reported today and one case currently in quarantine which is showing no signs and appears to be negative. We are awaiting confirmation on the case from the government vet lab in Karatina.

Please be very careful around strange dogs and make sure your own pets are up to date with their vaccines.

The furious form is usually widely recognised but the 'dumb form' is extremely dangerous as animals often present as overly friendly and loose all fear.

Rabies is invariable fatal once clinical signs begin and rapid intervention is required. Wash the wound well with soap and water and get to a clinic to start a course of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) as soon as possible. Dont take any chances.

Weve got our hands full! The NKVS team has been busy helping at the annual KSPCA/TNR vaccination and sterilisation campaign. The campaign runs for four days and covers Nanyuki and Timau offering free rabies vaccinations and sterilisations for low income households. By sterilising and vaccinating we help control populations and the number of unwanted litters as well as preventing the spread of rabies to people. It also provides an opportunity to provide education on basic animal care and welfare. Its a win win for everyone not just the animals!

Little Beki is just as chuffed as we are to finally be free of all her Mango worms. Beki was rescued from a lugga in Laikipia West.

Mango flies (Cordylobia anthropophaga) are a species of blow fly that’s native to certain parts of Africa.

Female mango flies like to lay their eggs in dirt or sand that carries the scent of urine or f***s. They may also lay their eggs in the seams of clothing, bedding, towels, and other soft materials that have been left outdoors. The larvae are parasitic and once they find a host, will implant themselves and continue to develop which results in large red boil-like lesions.

The larvae need to be removed carefully and may sometimes need local anaethesia and antibiotics to prevent secondary infections of the wounds. It is important to not 'burst' the larvae inside the skin.

Some handy prevention tips if you live in a high risk area

*If washing is hung outside, make sure its ironed with high heat especially around the seams

*Wash and tumbledry on high heat

*Wash your pets bed regularly

*Keep your pet clean and well groomed

*Avoid damp contaminated soil

*Clean up fruit that falls from trees and don't let it sit and spoil on the ground

*Clean up faeces and urine ASAP
