Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is a treatment to prevent HIV infection after a possible exposure. It involves taking antiretroviral medications within 72 hours (3 days) of exposure to the virus.
Timing is Critical: PEP is most effective when started as soon as possible after potential exposure. The window for starting PEP is within 72 hours of exposure.
How It Works: PEP involves a 28-day course of antiretroviral drugs. These medications stop the virus from establishing a permanent infection in the body.
Follow-Up: tests for HIV at specific intervals (e.g., 4 weeks, 3 months) after completing PEP to confirm youβre HIV-negative.
