Preah Palilay Temple
Preah Palilay is an intimate yet intriguing sanctuary situated just north of Phimeanakas within the ancient city of Angkor Thom. The temple showcases a harmonious blend of Hindu and Buddhist architectural influences. Due to the absence of inscriptions, its precise construction date remains uncertain, adding to its air of mystery.
Although located within the popular Angkor Thom complex, Preah Palilay is often bypassed by visitors. Those who do wander in, however, are rewarded with a captivating atmosphereβits slender tower rising amid dense jungle, flanked by serpentine naga balustrades and weathered, headless guardian statues. This quiet, atmospheric site offers an unforgettable glimpse into the spiritual and artistic heritage of the Khmer empire and is well worth a visit.

Prasat Chrung Temple
At each corner of Angkor Thom stands a small sanctuary known as Prasat Chrung, meaning βShrine of the Cornerβ in Khmer. Built near the end of King Jayavarman VIIβs reign, these four temples share an identical design featuring a cruciform sanctuary and a square stone pavilion. Their delicate carvingsβcelestial figures, Lokeshvara images, and Buddha pedimentsβreflect refined Bayon-period artistry. Among the four, the south-east Prasat Chrung is the best preserved and offers the most impressive details.

The Phimeanakas Temple
built in the mid-10th century, was originally surrounded by a courtyard, which disappeared over time until its rediscovery through excavation. Situated within the Royal Palace complex, it spanned 581 meters in length and 242 meters in width, serving as a sacred site.
To the north of the temple lie two ponds: Srah Srei (Womenβs Bath) and Srah Bros (Menβs Bath). In the late 13th century, the Chinese diplomat Zhou Daguan recorded a local legend about the temple. The story spoke of the king spending the first watch of each night with a woman, believed to be a NΔga spirit, in the temple tower. It was said that if the NΔga did not appear, disaster would befall the kingdom, and if the king failed to show, calamity would strike the land.
