Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with a five-year survival rate of only about 18%. More than 60–70% of liver cancer cases are linked to HBV infection. This study suggests that evaluating a patient’s immune-exhaustion status may allow prediction of their underlying genetic mutations and degree of viral integration. This could enable earlier prediction of immunotherapy response and support the selection of individualized treatment options.

The findings were recently published in JHEP Reports, an international journal issued by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL).

Professor Lee Yoon Suk stated, “Through multi-center data, we confirmed that single-port robotic surgery enhances intraoperative safety and precision, contributing to reduced bleeding, fewer conversions to other surgical methods, and faster recovery for patients. With further validation through standardized protocols and long-term follow-up, robotic surgery may become a strong alternative within minimally invasive colorectal cancer surgery.”

The study was recently published in the international journal ‘Surgical Endoscopy’.

A new blood test that can predict responses to immunotherapy in patients with advanced liver cancer has been published in an international journal. A research team led by Professor Ji Won Han and Professor Hee Sun Cho from the Department of Gastroenterology at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, and Professor Soon Kyu Lee from the Department of Gastroenterology at Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital, developed a blood-based predictive indicator, the Peripheral Blood Inflammatory Score (PBIS), to assess response to the widely used first-line therapy—atezolizumab-bevacizumab (AB) combination therapy—in patients with advanced liver cancer.

Even amid chaos, pediatric emergency medicine holds a special place in Professor Bae’s heart. The turning point came during his residency, when he witnessed an unconscious child regain stability thanks to quick judgment and teamwork.
“I realized the emergency room is where you can make a meaningful difference at the most critical moments of a child’s life,” he recalls.
His mentor’s words—“The treatment of critically ill children begins in the emergency room, and emergency medicine is where a moment’s judgment determines the child’s tomorrow”—remain his guiding compass to this day.
Since the moment he saw a critically ill child stabilize and a guardian’s fear turn into relief, he resolved to become not just a doctor who treats diseases, but one who helps restore the lives of children and families as a whole.
“Even in a crisis, it’s vital to see things from the child’s perspective,” says Professor Bae, emphasizing that alongside swift and accurate judgment, “empathy” is what truly defines pediatric emergency care. “Understanding a child’s fear and easing a parent’s anxiety—this is where genuine treatment begins.”

Mr. Wermi, a 37-year-old man from Burkina Faso, had been suffering since 2019 from a rare skin disease. With nodular prurigo, neurodermatitis, and benign skin tumors, he endured severe itching and pain, often unable to leave his home for two to three weeks at a time. The intense itching deprived him of sleep and limited not only his daily life but also his social activities. Despite receiving multiple consultations and tests locally, the lack of specialized care in his home country meant he was left without a proper diagnosis, forced to live with relentless suffering.
