General information

The following is a brief history of USFKOA. Organizing and establishing another sports officiating association “took its roots” in November, 2008. There was concern from Youth Services that as of January 1, 2009 there would be no sports officiating organization to officiate the upcoming youth services basketball season. Youth Services was faced with the possibility of having to rely on volunteer officials or perhaps enter into agreements with individual officials. Previously I was President of a sport official’s association in Japan, (USFJOA) so upon hearing this I thought on the matter, and then decided to initiate the process of establishing another association primarily as a “safety net” to ensure that the children participating in youth sports had basketball officials in January, 2009. As it turned out the incumbent sports officiating organization was able to continue as the contractor providing services for youth, high school and military sports. As Area II Basketball Assignor at the time, I continued to support the incumbent association in providing excellence in basketball officiating, while maintaining and updating the USFKOA registration annually. In establishing a second association, I tried to make it clear to members of the incumbent association that they would not be required to resign, or otherwise renounce their membership in order to join USFKOA. My vision was to embrace the incumbent association as a “sister entity” and have a dual membership system, and work together for a synergistic effect. In other words officials can be members of both associations. In the name of diplomacy, good relations and the best interest of those we serve, I would like to re-emphasize that in joining USFKOA you may in-fact maintain your current memberships and we will not require resignation from any other association in which you are a member.
