Now that we’ve explored and discussed strategies for getting to sleep, it’s up to you to figure out which ones work for you! We hope that you’ve learned something new during our time together and gained some insight from us as well as your fellow group members.

Chronic pain, illnesses, or other unknown physical problems can disturb your sleep.

Schedule a visit with us or your general practitioner to investigate potential causes to find out if there’s something else going on that may need medical intervention.

Examples of medical conditions that cause insomnia are:

nasal/sinus allergies

Gastrointestinal problems

Endocrine problems such as hyperthyroidism

Arthritis

Asthma

Neurological conditions

Chronic pain

Lower back pain

Also, talk to your doctor about any medications that you’re taking - they might be causing or contributing to your insomnia too.

Alcohol and insomnia have a complicated relationship.

Although it may seem as though alcohol can help us fall asleep, consuming it will make it more difficult to reach a deep sleep. Without that deep sleep or REM sleep, our minds and bodies are unable to do what’s necessary to prepare for the next day.

If you're dependant on a “nightcap” to sleep at night, consider going without for a week or two and amp up your relaxation routine.

Our olfactory system is extremely sensitive and acts as a direct line to the brain. By anointing yourself with a few drops of oil before bedtime, you can encourage your senses to settle down.

Add a few drops to your wrists and inhale deeply, or mix with water and spritz it on your pillowcase.

Additionally, if you take the time to collect a few delicious flavors and pick out a cup or mug that makes you smile, the experience will be all the better.

When it comes to tea, you’ll want to avoid anything with caffeine, and you also don’t want to drink too much, too close to your bedtime, as it’ll make you need to use the restroom. Some of our favorites are blends that contain chamomile, lavender, valerian root, lemon balm, or passionflower.

Dedicate a few hours once a week to meal prep, and you’ll have healthy food at the ready all week long. I suggest investing in a week's worth of glass storage containers, prep as soon as you return from the grocery store, and remove any unwanted junk food from the counter and cupboards.

Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation that you can access through apps or the Internet. Yoga Nidra, known as “yogic sleep,” is a sleep-life state experienced during a lengthy meditation.

When you’re at home, use a recording of your choice (there are plenty on Youtube, just Google ‘Yoga Nidra’), lie down in a position that you can easily maintain for an extended period of time, using cushions, bolsters, or an eye mask as necessary.

Regular sessions are best, and it’s likely that you’ll fully reap the benefits once you become more comfortable with the practice.

There are many types of yoga, and some of them are perfect for winding down.

Yin yoga, for example, is created to engage the mind and body in total relaxation through slow poses that are held for minutes at a time and coupled with deep breathing.

Your practice can last anywhere from five minutes to an hour (or even more if you’re really into it) and can make a significant difference in winding down your nighttime routine.
