Tinnitus can be a debilitating symptom. This patient had left sided tinnitus with a normal audiogram. She would have been told that her ears are fine and she has to “live with it”. But more detailed testing with otoacoustic emissions does indeed show a problem with the hair cells on the left, leading to treatment options.

Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves can’t efficiently go through the outer ear to the eardrum and the small bones of the middle ear. It can often be corrected surgically or medically. Sensorineural hearing loss, however, is caused by damage to the hair cells in the inner ear. It’s permanent, but HHF researchers are working toward better treatments and biological cures.
