Today, we pause and reflect on the vital yet often unseen contributions of anesthesiologists — especially during times of crises.

In emergencies, they do not just manage pain; they secure airways, maintain circulation, guide resuscitation, and save lives in the most critical moments.

This day serves as a reminder of the intellectual rigor, vigilance, and compassion that define the specialty of anesthesiology — where physiology meets precision and calm thinking under pressure sustains lives.

Let us recognize those who stand steady behind every life-saving procedure — our anesthesiologists.

We were delighted to host Dr. Wael Saasouh, a dear alumnus of our department and a 2012 graduate of our residency program, for a specialty lecture to our faculty and residents.

Dr. Saasouh is a board-certified anesthesiologist at Wayne State University, Regional Director for Research, and founding chair of the NorthStar Anesthesia Research Fellowship.

During the session, Dr. Saasouh shared insights from recent publications, offered recommendations on intraoperative hypotension, and discussed opportunities for research collaboration.

The session was very well received by our attendings and residents, who are always grateful to connect and collaborate with program alumni.
