May this season of giving be the start of your better life.
Have a great and blessed holiday! 🌠⛄💖

07/12/2018

The holiday season for most people is a fun time of the year filled with parties, celebrations, and social gatherings with family and friends. For many people, it is a time filled with sadness, self-reflection, loneliness, and anxiety.

Sadness is a truly personal feeling. What makes one person feel sad may not affect another person. Typical sources of holiday sadness include:

Stress
Fatigue
Unrealistic expectations
Over-commercialization
Financial stress
The inability to be with one's family and friends

Balancing the demands of shopping, parties, family obligations, and house guests may contribute to feelings of being overwhelmed and increased tension. People who do not view themselves as depressed may develop stress responses, such as:

Headaches
Excessive drinking
Over-eating
Insomnia

Others may experience post-holiday sadness after New Year's Day. This can result from built-up expectations and disappointments from the previous year, coupled with stress and fatigue...

Here are 16 tips for coping with holiday stress and depression:
1- Make realistic expectations for the holiday season.
2- Set realistic goals for yourself. Do not take on more responsibilities than you can handle.
3- Make a list and prioritize the important activities. This can help make holiday tasks more manageable.
4- Be realistic about what you can and cannot do.
5- Live and enjoy the present.
6- Look to the future with optimism.
7- Don't set yourself up for disappointment and sadness by comparing today with the good old days of the past.
8- If you are lonely, try volunteering some time to help others.
9- Find holiday activities that are free, such as looking at holiday decorations, going window shopping without buying, and watching the winter weather, whether it's a snowflake or a raindrop.
10- Limit your drinking, since excessive drinking will only increase your feelings of depression.
11- Try something new. Celebrate the holidays in a new way.
12- Spend time with supportive and caring people.
13- Reach out and make new friends.
Make time to contact a long-lost friend or relative and spread some holiday cheer.
14- Make time for yourself!
15- Let others share the responsibilities of holiday tasks.
16- Keep track of your holiday spending. Overspending can lead to depression when the bills arrive after the holidays are over. Extra bills with little budget to pay them can lead to further stress and depression.

REMEMBER that holidays are for giving the unfortunate and helping those in need...

People who think about su***de don't want to die; they want to change the life they have.

Since September is Su***de Prevention month, we decided to break the taboo and talk about the myths concerning su***de:

Myth #1: You have to be mentally ill to think about su***de.
Myth #2: People who talk about su***de aren’t serious and won’t go through with it.
Myth #3: Once a person has made a serious su***de attempt, that person is unlikely to make another.
Myth #4: If a person is serious about killing themselves then there is nothing you can do.
Myth #5: Talking about su***de is a bad idea as it may give someone the idea to try it.
Myth #6: Most su***des happen in the winter months.
Myth #7: People who threaten su***de are just attention seeking and shouldn’t be taken seriously.
Myth #8: People who are suicidal want to die.

Not everyone who thinks about su***de will tell someone and there are some people who give no indication at all of their intention.
However, there are warning signs that we can all look out for. These include, if a person is:
1- Talking or writing about death, dying or su***de.
2- Actively looking for ways to kill themselves.
3- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live.
4- Talking about being a burden to others.
5- Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain.
6- Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs.
7- Suddenly very much ‘recovered’ after a period of depression.
8- Visiting or calling people unexpectedly to say goodbye either directly or indirectly.
9- Making arrangements; setting their affairs in order.
10-Giving things away, such as prized possession

Su***des concern all of us, because we can all do things to help create a su***de-safer community. We can start by being alert to the warning signs, by recognizing and understanding the pain someone is going through, being direct about communicating concerns and ask for professional help.

Remember that one conversation can mean the difference between life and death.

Mind Matter’s Beliefs & Mission

We believe in every person’s right to access their mental health through a state of well-being in which a person understands his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

Therefore, we assist patients and their families with treatment, support and awareness about mental illness. We provide individual and group support depending on the situation. We are specialized in crisis management, mental health evaluation, case assessment, psychiatric treatment and integrative psychotherapy.

Our goal is to remove the stigma concerning mental illnesses and allow the individual suffering to reach a stable state in which he or she can regain control over his/her life and maintain a healthy approach to personal, professional and social life overall.

Together, we move from paralysis to analysis, we change lives.
