Although it's back to school and back to routine, keep in mind that Exercise is crucial for controlling your child's blood sugar.
Having Type1 Diabetes little heroes? Exercise is a key part of your child's overall health and lifestyle.
Every day, children between the ages of 6 and 17 should engage in moderate-to-intense physical exercise for 60 minutes.
Tips to help keep your child safe during exercise:
- At first, check your child's blood sugar before, during, and after exercise to see how it's affected by exercise.
- Teach your child on diabetes management and how to identify important signs.
- When your child's blood sugar falls below the desired level, have them have a snack before working out.
- Make sure your child's emergency glucagon kit and fast-acting glucose pills are close at hand. (An injection called glucagon rapidly increases blood sugar levels).
- If your child's blood sugar is 250 mg/dL or above, test for ketones. If ketone levels are high, don't let your child exercise.
