SANAD is an independent NGO established that provides holistic home hospice care, free of charge

SANAD is an independent non-governmental non-profit organization established in January 2010 in an effort to provide dignity and quality of life to terminally-ill patients and their families and the last and most precious times of their lives. Our focus is on the preservation of dignity and relief of suffering in patients with terminal illness in order to maintain the best possible quality of life. We strive to empower patients and their families to become skilled in their own care and allow them to make informed choices that are in line with their values and beliefs. We aim to provide holistic care to address the medical, psychological and social needs of patients and their caregivers. This includes management of pain and other symptoms as well as treatment of medical complications. These services are delivered to patients regardless of nationality, religion, political affiliation, gender, diagnosis or ability to pay. SANAD is committed to researching and addressing policy challenges related to the provision of palliative care. In order to advance its mission, SANAD will also focus on advocating for the removal of existing barriers within the health care system that may affect the ability of individuals to access palliative care. In parallel, SANAD will also undertake extensive awareness raising activities at the levels of the community and the medical and nursing professions to facilitate a better understanding of the issues and the concepts behind hospice and palliative care in Lebanon. The Mental Health Unit at SANAD organized a self-care session at the office for the clinical team, creating a safe space to pause, reflect, and reconnect. The session focused on compassion fatigue and burnout, real challenges faced by those working closely with patients and families, and highlighted practical self-care strategies to support emotional well-being. It was a meaningful reminder that caring for ourselves is essential to continue caring for others with presence, empathy, and strength.

Family meetings are a cornerstone of palliative care.

In palliative care, supporting family caregivers is just as important as caring for the patient. Family meetings create a safe space where healthcare teams, patients, and loved ones can come together to share information, discuss goals of care, and plan the next steps, openly and compassionately.

Research shows that while family meetings are widely recommended, there has been limited guidance on how to conduct them effectively. New multidisciplinary clinical guidelines aim to change that by offering a clear framework for preparing, leading, and evaluating family meetings in palliative care settings.

When done well, family meetings can:
- Improve communication and understanding
- Align care with the patient’s wishes
- Support families emotionally during difficult moments
- Strengthen trust between families and care teams

Family meetings help ensure that no one walks this journey alone. 💜

عن الروحانية | قصة ماريا

نشارككم حكايات حقيقية من قلب يومياتنا مع المرضى وعائلاتهم، نرويها بموافقتهم لتسليط الضوء على منهجية الرعاية التلطيفية.
حكاية مريضتنا ماريا، رحمها الله، هي عن Spirituality أو الروحانية في الرعاية التلطيفية.

منهجية الرعاية الروحية في القصة تتجلّى في كيفية مرافقة ماريا لاكتشاف مخاوفها، وصراعها بين التسليم والقلق، ثم مساعدتها على إعادة بناء معنى لحياتها ودورها، حتى وهي طريحة الفراش.
هذه القصة تبرز أن الرعاية الروحية ليست طقوساً دينية فحسب، بل هي رحلة إنسانية تُعنى بإيجاد معنى، واحتضان الألم، ومساندة المريض ليعيش أيامه الأخيرة بكرامة، وسلام، ومحبة.

عن الرعاية التلطيفية:
في حين أن الرعاية التلطيفية تبدأ من لحظة التشخيص، فإن مهمة سند تتركز على المرحلة التي يصبح فيها المريض في نهاية رحلته مع مرض مزمن أو مستعص، حيث نقدم له ولعائلته الدعم الطبي والتمريضي والنفسي في المنزل، دون أي مقابل، لضمان كرامته وراحته في الأشهر والأيام الأخيرة.
