Rhesus negative women whose partner is rhesus positive can become pregnant with a fetus who is rhesus positive.
So whenever there is a breach in the materno-fetal blood barrier some blood cells will mix exposing the mother to rhesus positive cells.
Since she doesn’t have it she will develop antibodies against it which won’t be a problem for the current pregnancy.
However if she gets pregnant again with a rhesus positive fetus, the antibodies will start destroying the baby’s blood cells which leads to severe anemia, hydrops and possible death of the fetus.
That is why it is imperative for rhesus negative women to receive Rh immuno globulins at 28 weeks and after birth if the baby turned out to be rhesus positive. Sometimes a quantification test is done to estimate the amount of exposure the woman had and give the appropriate amount of medication.

The first stage of labor is characterized by cervical thinning and dilation from a closed cervix to fully (10 cm) dilated allowing the baby to leave the uterus that has been holding him for nine months.
This stage is divided into 2 phases:
The latent phase from 0 to 3 cm which is usually slow.
The active phase from 4 to 10 cm which normally will take about 1 cm per hour but could be faster.
