Undergoing a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery is a massive step towards a longer, healthier life. Your heart is stronger, but your recovery is just beginning!

The Phased Rehab Process: Building Back Stronger
Cardiac Rehab is a structured, progressive journey, typically divided into phases where Physiotherapy plays a vital role:
Phase 1: In-Hospital Recovery (Early Mobilisation)
Focus: Immediate stability, proper breathing mechanics, and preventing post-operative complications like pneumonia or blood clots.
Physio Role: Teaching safe bed mobility, supported coughing techniques (to protect the sternum), gentle range-of-motion exercises, and early, supervised walking for short distances.
Phase 2: Supervised Outpatient Rehab (The TASS Physio Stage)
Focus: Structured, monitored exercise to gradually increase your heart’s capacity and overall fitness. This is where most patients attend the dedicated cardiac rehab program, often collaborating with us for advanced, tailored physical therapy.
Physio Role:
Monitored Aerobic Training: Prescribing walking, cycling, or other activities at a safe, pre-determined heart rate (HR-guided exercise).
Sternal Precautions: Strict education and training to protect the healing breastbone (typically no lifting over 5-10 lbs or certain arm movements for 6-8 weeks).
Progressive Strength: Introducing very light resistance (bands/weights) for lower body and core, gradually progressing to full body strength training after sternal clearance (usually 8-12+ weeks).
Risk Factor Education: Teaching you how to monitor your body, manage energy, and understand vital signs.
Physio Role: Teaching safe bed mobility, supported coughing techniques (to protect the sternum), gentle range-of-motion exercises, and early, supervised walking for short distances.
