how important is it to service your pedals?

VERY. 🔧

your pedals take a beating. every stroke, every hill, every commute – they're spinning thousands of times. when bearings wear out, you lose efficiency, gain friction, and eventually they seize up completely.

proper pedal service means breaking them down, cleaning out the gunk, replacing bearings if needed, and reassembling with fresh grease. it's not glamorous but it's essential.

proper internal cable maintenance means actually PULLING those cables out, cleaning the gunk, treating the rust, and reassembling. it takes time, but that's the difference between a quick fix and a bike that actually lasts.

you still see these on new bikes—they're tucked under the bottom bracket, which SEEMS protected. but here's the truth: they're NOT rainproof, and our island climate is brutal on them.

here's the reality:

PROS:
✓ compact design
✓ lighter weight
✓ less expensive than hydraulic

CONS:
✗ NOT waterproof—rain gets in and causes rust
✗ hard to access for cleaning & adjustment
✗ buildup of grime inside the housing
✗ requires regular disassembly to maintain
✗ corrodes quickly in humid climates

the bottom line? if you've got one, don't ignore it. regular cleaning, lubrication, and inspection are NON-NEGOTIABLE. neglect = seized brakes = safety risk.
