Sri Lanka Foundation, was founded in 1974,
with the support of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung of Bonn, as a centre of labour education and training. SLF is a premier non- formal adult education centre in asia with a specific focus on democratization through training and dissemination of knowledge. Its areas of training and education include labour relations, gender equity, community development, grass roots leadership, good governance, disaster management, environment and health. Capacity building of civil society institutions and leadership training for community organizations are also major themes of SLF programs. These programmes are carried out in collaboration with governmental and non governmental institutions, private
sector establishments, universities, trade unions, community and international organization via seminars, workshops,
discussions, publications, the print and electronic media.

The Sri Lanka Foundation Institute successfully conducted the sixth workshop of its ongoing Field-Site First Aid series on 9th February, 2026, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute for the Sports division of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF). The workshop focused on managing acute sports injuries.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, the Sri Lanka Foundation organized this programme to empower sports coaches, athletes, and sports masters-in-charge of the Sports Division of the SLAF.

The Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force and to Group Captain D. E. Geeganage, Secretary of the Air Force Sports Council, as well as Group Captain Shamila Dharmawardana, extended their fullest cooperation in organising the workshop.
The programme was coordinated by the Head of the Human Capital Development Unit of SLFI and Senior Lecturer, Mr. Bharatha Herath. The Senior Brand Manager of the Haleon Group, Mr. Udara Achalanke, representing the sponsoring brand Iodex, along with Brand Manager Mr. Manoj Balakrishnan and Brand Executive Ms. Sesadi Wijesinghe, attended the inauguration.

The main resource person of the workshop was Olympic Sports Physician, Dr. Himan De Silva.

Marking a historic milestone in Sri Lanka’s disaster preparedness and child protection framework, the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI), in partnership with the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS), successfully conducted a three-day residential Training of Trainers (ToT) Programme on Psychosocial Interventions for Child Survivors of Hurricanes, Landslides, and Floods from 8th to 10th February 2026 at the SLFI.

This initiative launched a Training of Trainers Manual on Psychosocial Interventions for Child Survivors of Hurricanes, Landslides, and Floods, to standardise psychosocial support for child survivors of natural disasters in Sri Lanka. Designed as a structured guideline, it will be implemented as the policy framework for a nationally recognised intervention system.
The programme, brought together district-level workers and volunteers of SLRCS island wide, school teachers, and SLPP members creating a strong nationwide network of trained personnel equipped to respond to children’s psychological needs during emergencies.

The keynote address was delivered by Professor Athula Sumathipala, Professor of Psychiatry at Keele University, UK, who emphasized the urgent need for structured, evidence-based mental health systems in disaster contexts.

The programme also featured expert contributions from Dr. Neil Fernando, Consultant Psychiatrist and Senior Lecturer at KDU, Dr. Saman Weerawansa, Academic Director, SLFI, Dr. H. P. C. Wasantha Pathirana, Senior Lecturer, SLFI, Dr. Yamuna Ellawala Consultant Community Physician, Health Promotion Bureau, Ms. Preethika Sakalasooriya Legal Director, NCPA), and Dr. Sathika De Silva.

The initiative was coordinated by Dr. H. P. C. Wasantha Pathirana (SLFI) and Ms. Dilini Ransinghe (SLRCS) under the guidance of Dr. Mahesh Gunasekara, Secretary General & CEO SLRCS, Professor Seetha Bandara, Chairperson of SLFI.

The inauguration was graced by Mrs. Stephanie Siriwardena, member of Prison Monitoring Committee, and Global Shapers Community, and Dr. Preethi as special guests.

This landmark initiative represents a significant step toward institutionalising a nationally coordinated psychosocial intervention system to protect and promote the mental well-being of children affected by disasters in Sri Lanka.

The National Diploma in Sports Strength & Conditioning first intake for the year 2026 was inaugurated at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on 23rd January 2026. The Human Capital Development Unit organised the event. The course ensures that the physical trainers get national and international standard training, benchmarking professional development. More than 40 participants are enrolled in the course.

Mr R.B Wickramasinghe, national weight lifting coach and former Assistant Director Department of Sports Development and Mr Senaka Wasala Academic registrar Sri Lanka Foundation were present on the occasion. The inauguration of the Higher National Diploma in Criminal Law was held on 28th December 2025, online. This programme is designed to provide in-depth knowledge of Criminal Law, Evidence Law, Penalty Code, Bail Law, Code of Criminal Procedure Law and other criminal statutes. It is aimed to develop legal capacity of students, public officers, law enforcement personnel, and those seeking a professional pathway in the legal field.

The occasion was graced by the presence of academic staff & legal professionals, highlighting the importance of criminal law education in strengthening justice, governance, and the rule of law in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Foundation Institute inaugurated the Advanced Certificate Course in Public Administration on 11th January 2026 online. The occasion featured a keynote address by Mr. Nalaka Dissanayake, Senior Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Public Security & Parliamentary Affairs who emphasised the importance of effective public administration in enhancing governance and service delivery. Participants were introduced to the course syllabus, learning outcomes, and expected competencies upon completion. The course covers five comprehensive modules; Introduction to Public Administration, Office Management, Writing Skills & File Management, Financial & Accounts Systems and Professional Development.

Fifty five (55) Public and Semi-Government employees were enrolled in the course. Ms. Sarojini Wickramasinghe, Senior Lectuter SLFI coordinates the course.
