Fucoidan Japan At the Forefront of Alternative Medicine

Ultra-Low Molecular Mozuku Extract:
The Power of Fucoidan

Why Is Fucoidan Attracting Attention as One of the Notable Auxiliary Medical Treatments? Fucoidan is a type of water-soluble dietary fiber and is an unctuous ingredient found primarily in mozoku (cladosiphon decipiens), kelp, mekabu (sporophyll of sea mustard) and other similar sea vegetation. A component in seaweed helps protect the body in various ways, creating a barrier and ebbing moisture to prevent the pe*******on of bacteria. This chemical component is a polysaccharide called "sulphation fucose". At the 55th Japan Cancer Academic Society General Meeting held in 1996, the component fucoidan was reported to have anti-cancer properties, attracting immediate attention. The Mechanism of Cancer Treatment Using Fucoidan

In regard to the medical mechanism of “fucoidan", there are still many areas which are not clear, though current research in the field continues to advance. However, clinically, the number of studies reporting progress in many areas has risen. Currently, the central general theory concerning how fucoidan fights cancer is in its triggering cancer cell "apoptosis", a process where cancer cells literally “commit suicide”. As stated earlier, the human body is composed of approximately 60 trillion cells, and in accordance with the process of cell regeneration, new cells are constantly replacing dying cells, thus maintaining this balance of 60 trillion or so of cells. In an opposite manner, the phenomenon in which a cell causes itself to self-destruct is called the "apoptosis phenomenon". To cite similar phenomena, think of how tadpoles lose their tails as they mature, or of how a human baby at birth shows no signs of the webbing once joining its fingers while still just an embryo in its mother’s womb. Apart from this balance maintenance capability of healthy cells, we should also take note of cells which are not only able to regenerate, but also to continue increasing in number -- cancer cells. A continued increase in the number of cancer cells facilitates its spread, eventually resulting in the body falling victim to cancer. The substance which, in fact, is capable of halting this increase by forcing cancer cells to the self-destructive process of apoptosis before the body falls prey is “fucoidan”.

ANTICANCER PROPERTIES

A diet high in fucoidan may also help prevent and treat cancer. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center says several laboratory studies have shown that fucoidan has medicinal properties that could be helpful in combating some forms of cancer but cautions that human data thus far are lacking. The center cites one study that showed fucoidan appears to inhibit the spread of cancerous cells by preventing the adhesion of tumor cells to the extracellular matrix. In another study, fucoidan induced apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in human T-cell leukemia virus type I, or HTLV-1, that causes adult T-cell leukemia. The polysaccharide paves the way for apoptosis by inactivating NF-kB, a naturally occurring substance that regulates antiapoptotic proteins.

Hepatitis B

Female in the 60s
Chief Complaint: No significant symptoms
Past Medical History: Depression

Current Medical History:
She had received treatment for hepatitis B at another hospital for about 20 years. She had been intravenously given 5 ampoules of conservative treatment of liver sick drug (SMC) four days a week, however no improvement had been observed. She visited our clinic in August 2002. After the informed consent procedure, she began taking fucoidan mix as a treatment option without impairing the QOL.

Treatment outcomes:
After taking 1.0g of fucoidan mix per day, her levels of GOT were reduced to 9450, and her GPT levels were reduced to 79 from 36. She had received 5 ampoules of liver asylum agent (SMC) (intravenous injection) at the previous hospital. During the treatment at our hospital, the agent was reduced to 1 ampoule from 3 ampoules, then administration of SMC became no longer necessary 6 months later.

Intractable duodenal ulcer

Female in the 80s
Chief Complaint: Abdominal pain
Medical History: intractable duodenal ulcer, rheumatoid arthritis and angina pectoris

Current Medical history:
She received helicobacter pylori eradication and PPI therapy, to combat the duodenal ulcer in May 2002 which then improved. Then, in August the same year, it relapsed. Again, she received H. pylori eradication treatment and PPI therapy. However, there were no signs of improvement this time. This was the time when we proposed the administration of fucoidan mix. After providing sufficient information on fucoidan, she and her family members agreed and she began receiving fucoidan mix treatment. Her condition improved dramatically enough to be discharged from hospital. Thereafter, we continued prescribing fucoidan mix and PPI. She visited our hospital complaining of abdominal pain in June 2003. The examination result showed that the duodenal ulcer had relapsed. After interviewing the patient, it was found that she had made her own judgement and discontinued taking fucoidan mix since April 2003. She had continued only the PPI. So, we started the administration of fucoidan mix again.

Treatment outcomes:
When her duodenal ulcer was found to have relapsed, she was provided with fucoidan mix. In one week, the ulcer improved.

Carcinoma peritonitis developed after the total gastrectomy, re**al stenosis induced by peritoneal dissemination (which had spread to the pouch of Douglas) and Sigmoid colon stenosis

Male in the 50s
Chief Complaint: Problems with defecation and pasting flatus, abdominal distension
Past Medical History: Gastric cancer, total gastrectomy, lymph node dissection, splenectomy, cholecystectomy

Current Medical History:
In January 2004, intestinal obstruction occurred induced by the Schnitzler metastasis, and he was administered Total Parenteral Nutrition(TPN)(a method of getting nutrition intravenously) at another hospital. He received chemotherapy with TS-1 because his condition at the time was to the extent that his doctor needed to consider performing a colostomy, which he had to discontinue because of the side effects from the liver dysfunction, and used Taxotere instead. He visited our clinic in February 2004 to continue medical treatment. I determined that Taxotere was not working on him. After he was provided with sufficient information on fucoidan, he resumed chemotherapy using TS-1, accompanied by fucoidan mix.

Treatment Outcomes:
After he was administered 4g of fucoidan mix a day, PHA levels increased to the reference value. His liver started functioning and he was able to eat. An idea of performing a colostomy, which had been considered earlier, was no longer necessary. His condition improved, which was classified as close to CR (complete response).
