Our latest research paper, “Awareness of colorectal cancer symptoms and risk factors: a cross-sectional study at the largest tertiary care centre in Sri Lanka,” is now published!

🔬 What we found:

58.7% of adults could not name any colorectal cancer (CRC) symptoms without prompts.

After prompting, awareness improved — 75.3% recognised blood in stools as a key warning sign.

44.3% could not identify any CRC risk factors unprompted.

Excessive alcohol intake (72.7%) and low fibre intake (64%) were the most recognised risk factors when prompted.

⚠️ Key Message:
Unprompted CRC awareness in Sri Lanka remains low, highlighting the urgent need for targeted public health campaigns — especially for men, younger adults, and those with lower education levels.

Let’s keep working towards earlier detection and improved cancer outcomes in Sri Lanka. 🇱🇰💙

58.7% ක් මහා අන්ත්‍රයේ පිළිකාවල ලක්ෂණ කිසිවක් නොදැන සිටියා.

ලැයිස්තුවක් ලබා දුන් විට 75.3% ක් ලක්ෂණ හඳුනා ගත්තා

44.3% ක්ට අවදානම් සාධක කිසිවක් නොදැන සිටියා.

I am deeply honored and humbled to share that I received an award for my inclusion in the prestigious Stanford-Elsevier Top 2% Scientists in the World at the University of Colombo Annual Research Symposium 2025.

It was a privilege to accept this recognition from the Honorable Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

This achievement is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and collaborative spirit that drives our research endeavors. My heartfelt thanks go to my colleagues, mentors, research fellows, and the University of Colombo for their continuous support.

කොළඹ විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ වාර්ෂික පර්යේෂණ සම්මන්ත්‍රණයේදී, ලොව ඉහළම 2% විද්‍යාඥයින් අතරට ඇතුළත් වීම වෙනුවෙන් පිරිනැමූ සම්මානය ලැබීම මට මහත් ගෞරවයක් හා නිහතමානී සතුටකි.

ගරු අග්‍රාමාත්‍යතුමිය අතින් මෙම සම්මානය ලැබීම විශේෂ ගවුරවයක් ලෙස සලකමි.

Incredibly proud to announce that our center was a key contributor to a major international study published in the prestigious journal, Colorectal Disease (DOI: 10.1111/codi.70245)!

This paper is part of a large-scale international audit by the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) on Faecal Incontinence (FI)—a common but often unaddressed problem with bowel control. Our involvement represents a significant contribution from a Low/Middle-Income Country (LMIC), ensuring global research is informed by local patient realities.

Congratulations to the University of Colombo Researchers!
Top Scientists Update Science-Wide Author Databases with Standardised Citation Indicators – Elsevier Data Repository.
On September 19, 2025, Elsevier released an updated dataset titled “Updated science-wide author databases of standardised citation indicators” This comprehensive analysis was conducted by a team of experts led by Professor John P.A. Ioannidis from Stanford University, USA.
Significantly, the study recognised the achievements of 63 Sri Lankan scientists, including 10 researchers from the University of Colombo. The analysis presented separate datasets for career-long and recent-year impact metrics, classifying scientists into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, as per the standard Science-Metrix classification. The career-long data were updated to include information up to the end of 2024, while the recent-year data specifically covered citations received during the calendar year 2024. The selection criteria were stringent: scientists had to either rank among the top 100,000 by c-score (with and without self-citations) or achieve a percentile rank of 2% or higher within their respective subfield.
In the list of the top scientists for the single year 2024, Emeritus Professor Kamini Mendis, Emeritus Professor Saroj Jayasinghe, Professor Senaka Rajapakse, Professor Priyanga Ranasinghe, Professor Nadira D Karunaweera, Professor Deepika Fernando, Professor Ranil Jayawardena, Professor Daksh*tha Wickramasinghe, Dr Meran Keshawa Ediriweera, and Dr Umesh Jayarajah. Additionally, Emeritus Professor Kamini Mendis, Emeritus Professor Saroj Jayasinghe, Professor Senaka Rajapakse, and Professor Nadira D Karunaweera were part of the Career-long Top Scientists list.

I am deeply humbled to be recognised among the Top 2% of researchers worldwide, as listed in the Stanford University–Elsevier database of the world’s most-cited scientists (https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/8).

This recognition reflects not just my individual work, but also the mentorship, collaborations, and institutional support that have shaped my research journey.
My focus has always been on advancing surgical education, training reform, and global equity in healthcare—and this achievement strengthens my commitment to producing impactful, collaborative, and practice-changing research.
