Permethrin 5% cream is an insecticide and works by killing parasites that live on humans, such as the scabies mite and p***c lice.

Scabies is an itchy skin disorder that leads to a rash. It is caused by an infestation with a parasite - the scabies mite. The mite lives on the skin and burrows into it. Scabies is contagious and spreads to others through close skin-to-skin contact.

P***c lice are tiny insects that live on humans, usually in the p***c hair. They are passed on through close body contact, such as when having s*x. They are grey or brown in colour and are sometimes called crabs because some of their legs have crab-like claws.

Both of these insects are treated with permethrin cream applied to the skin. Your whole body should be treated, twice - seven days apart. Permethrin cream is available on prescription, or you can buy it without a prescription at pharmacies

How It Works

Prescription-strength permethrin 5% kills the scabies mite. The medicine will come with instructions, and your doctor will also give you a treatment schedule. The National Institutes of Health recommends the following use of 5% permethrin cream for scabies:

Read the package directions carefully before using the medicine.
Thoroughly wash and dry skin.
Massage the cream into the skin from the head to the soles of the feet, paying special attention to creases in the skin, hands, feet, between fingers and toes, underarms, and groin. Scabies rarely infests the scalp of adults, although the hairline, neck, side of the head, and forehead may be infested in older people and in infants. Infants should be treated on the scalp, side of the head, and forehead.
Leave the permethrin cream on the skin for 8 to 14 hours.
Wash off by taking a shower or bath.
Put on clean clothes.
After treatment, itching may continue for up to 4 weeks.
