One moonlit night, the Buddha's elder disciples gathered in the flower-laden Gosinga Sālatree Wood. There, they shared with Sariputta, the kind of a practitioner that they thought would be able to illumine the fragrant Gosinga forest. The Buddha approved of all their descriptions and added one of his own as an encouragement to all of us.

"Here, Sāriputta, when a bhikkhu has returned from his almsround, after his meal, he sits down, folds his legs crosswise, sets his body erect, and establishing mindfulness in front of him, resolves: ‘I shall not break this sitting position until through not clinging my mind is liberated from the taints.’ That kind of bhikkhu could illuminate this Gosinga Sālatree Wood.”
-MN 32 The Mahagosinga sutta

Wishing everyone an exciting and fruitful practice!

What's on our mind today? The Buddha taught that "we become what we think".

“Bhikkhus, whatever a bhikkhu frequently thinks and ponders upon, that will become the inclination of his mind. If he frequently thinks and ponders upon thoughts of renunciation, he has abandoned the thought of sensual desire to cultivate the thought of renunciation, and then his mind inclines to thoughts of renunciation. If he frequently thinks and ponders upon thoughts of non-ill will…upon thoughts of non-cruelty, he has abandoned the thought of cruelty to cultivate the thought of non-cruelty, and then his mind inclines to thoughts of non-cruelty. (MN 19 - The Two Kinds of Thoughts)

“Friend Visaka, pleasant feeling is pleasant when it persists and painful when it changes. Painful feeling is painful when it persists and pleasant when it changes. Neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is pleasant when there is knowledge [of it] and painful when there is no knowledge [of it].”

Bhikkhuni Dhammadinna, an arahant, declared by the Buddha as the foremost nun in teaching, answers layman Visaka when he asks about the characteristics of the three feelings. (Culavedalla Sutta MN 44)

Below is a mural of Bhikkhuni Dhammadinna advising a laywoman, found in the temple Wat Pho, Bangkok, Thailand.

"What should be done for his disciples out of compassion by a Teacher who seeks their welfare and has compassion for them, that I have done for you.
There are these roots of trees, these are empty huts.
Meditate, O Monks! Do not delay, or else you will regret it later.
This is my instruction to you."

The 90 day vassa (Rains retreat) began on Esala Poya (July 10). This encouragement to practice is found in many teachings given by the Buddha (e.g. MN19, MN 152, SN 43.12)

Traditionally this is a time where monastics stop travelling, come together and spend the retreat deepening their practice and understanding of the Dhamma. We wish everyone a fruitful 3 months of practice.

Paramita has several resident Grizzled Giant Squirrels (Ratufa macroura). They are the size of a small cat, quite shy, but fun to watch as they forage among the trees. They have bushy tails that are as long as their bodies. They are actually the smallest of the giant squirrels, and are found in Sri Lanka and the Indian sub-continent.
