University of Liberia Experiential Learning and Assesment Lab - ELAB

University of Liberia Experiential Learning and Assesment Lab - ELAB ELAB is a well-equipped simulation center hospital-like environment with high-fidelity manikins.

The ELAB – CTLI’s clinical simulation education program – trains clinicians to competently and confidently provide patient care through the use of lifelike manikins and other training tools to mimic different clinical scenarios. ELAB’s facilities at JFK Medical Center and University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill campus will allow learners to practice both basic procedural skills (IV insertion, catheterization, etc.) as well as complex decision-making, communication, and teamwork. Tailored scenarios will train care providers in evidence-based best practices and allow them to rehearse new standards of care, elevating their practice based on relevant research findings and new developments in clinical practice.

ELAB Awarded $45K Grant from Laerdal, to Tackle Maternal Mortality in Liberia

The Samuel Bowman Experiential Learning and Assessment Lab (ELAB), housed at JFK Medical Center, has received a $45,000 grant from Laerdal Foundation to support Liberia’s fight against maternal deaths caused by postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), the leading cause of maternal mortality in the country.

With 742 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, Liberia’s rate is 10x the global SDG target. ELAB is taking bold, homegrown steps to reverse this trend.

What sets this effort apart? It’s 100% Liberian-led. Driven by local clinicians, educators, and innovators committed to sustainable, scalable solutions.

This is more than a grant. It’s an investment in Liberian solutions for Liberian challenges. 💪🏽

We're thrilled to announce that the ELAB has been awarded a grant from Laerdal Medical Laerdal Global Health for 4 MamaBirthie simulators after a rigorous vetting process!

Leveraging on the existing training programs, these simulators will bring to life cases of maternal abdominal and vaginal exams, normal & cesarean births, Bridge delivery, shoulder dystocia, and vacuum-assisted delivery, amongst others.

With the increasing need to prioritize Maternal health through the prevention of complications during pregnancy and childbirth, practicing these cases will prepare and enhance the skills of clinicians for real-life emergencies and aid in safer births for mothers and babies, thereby leading to improved maternal health and reduction in maternal mortality in our community at large.

Together, we can make a difference in patient outcomes!

Integration of simulation into the residency program was launched after months of planning with the Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons and the JFKMC.
The integration serves as a boost to the residency program, as research has shown that simulation training helps residents practice and perform basic to advanced skills and behaviors they need with a high level of accuracy before they step into a real-life clinical scenario. Continued engagement of the core specialties integration process is ongoing. The ELAB currently offers Pre-service training for medical school and TNIMA, trained 198 unique learners in 180 sessions, and has trained 49 faculty.
