A young man arrived at the office for his first interview. He used to live with his parents and was annoyed by their constant nagging about everything he did at home.
While awaiting the interview, he was thinking, “ Only if I secceed in today’s interview, I will deffenately say goodbye to my parents house and will settle down in my own space. I won’t have to listen to them anymore.”
He began to contemplate on the little things his parents always complain about. How his mom will ask him to make his bed after he wakes up. If the bathroom door is left open, his mom would ask him to close it and ensure that the tap is turned off correctly. How his father will ask him to switch of the fan or light before he leaves. His mother always nags him about keeping things in right place.
While thinking about all of this, he thought, ‘Why should do I have to go through all these?’ If I get this job, I will definitely leave their home. It’s just too much for one person.”
Looking around, the young man noticed that there were many candidates sitting in that office. The young man saw that the veranda light in the office was still on at 10am. Remembering his father’s words, he got up and switched off the light.
Then he saw that water was dripping from the water cooler kept in the office. He proceeded to turn off the tap correctly.
It was written on the board that the interview would be held on the second floor. So, while going upstairs, the young man saw that there was a chair in the way, he removed it from the way and fit it aside and went to the second floor. He spotted spider web in the next corner and used a paper towel to get rid of it, then disposed of it.
While waiting outside, the young man observed that the candidates had already entered and were exiting immediately.
When he inquired about it, he found out that the interviewers were not asking any questions. After receiving the file from the candidates, they promised to get back to them.
The young man arrived, entered, and handed over his file to the interviewers. After reviewing his file, they asked, ‘When will you join us?’
He was astonished.
According to the Interviewers, no questions were asked during today’s interviews. We observed everyone on the CCTV. Everyone arrived, but no one turned off the water tap or light; no one cleared the chair or spider web from the path. You accomplished all of that. Your values and habits are admirable. A person who lacks self discipline, no matter how smart or clever the may be, can not succeed in management or life.
After the interview was over, the young man reached home and hugged his mom and dad.
He apologized to them and thanked them for everything, “ In my life, my degree had no value in comparison to the lessons I learned from you both; because of your nagging on small matters.
Today, I came to know that not only education but good habits and values have their own importance if I want to succeed in life.”
Any moral?
