Alternative Youth Radio (AYR) is Liberia’s first youth-led community radio station, headquartered in Zorzor, Lofa County. Since launching in June 2016, AYR has been a powerful voice for underserved youth, using radio broadcasting, digital media, and grassroots advocacy to educate, inform, and transform communities across rural Liberia. We are now building the country’s first rural, tuition-free School of Professional Journalism and Vocational Education, which will train over 25,000 young people in media, ethical leadership, and sustainable skills in the next ten years. AYR’s impact model is rooted in our theory of change:

“When rural youth are equipped with knowledge, skills, and platforms to express themselves, they become powerful changemakers who lead development in their own communities.”
To date, AYR has trained and mentored more than 50 young leaders in journalism, broadcasting, and civic leadership—including youth with disabilities—and provides daily volunteer opportunities for 30+ rural young people. We believe in inclusion, innovation, and investment in the potential of Liberia’s next generation. The Unity Party Lofa County Homecoming and Fundraising Committee met in Matadi over the weekend, where members reviewed earlier decisions and finalized a series of activities leading up to the national fundraising program scheduled for December 6.

Chaired by Hon. Clarence Massaquoi, the session focused on four major events intended to mobilize Lofians across the county and abroad.

The first is a Sports Jamboree planned for Saturday, November 22, 2025. Teams representing “Upper Lofa”, Voinjama, Quadu Gboni, Zorzor, and Salayee, will face players from “Lower Lofa,” covering Kolahun, Foya, and Vahun. The Invincible Sports Park is being considered as a possible venue, though the final selection will depend on availability. Committee discussions indicated that the jamboree aims to build unity and spark early excitement ahead of the December events.

A Cultural Festival and Dollar Rally is set for Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the EJS Ministerial Complex. The program will highlight Lofa County’s cultural traditions through performances and displays, while also serving as a space for supporters to contribute financially toward preparations for the national fundraiser.

The committee reaffirmed December 6 as the central fundraising day, when counties across the country will be making their presentations. Lofa is expected to show strong organization and participation during the national event.

Another major activity will take place in Voinjama, where a Homecoming and Fundraising gathering is being planned. The event will allow residents in the county to receive updates directly, get involved in preparations, and support ongoing efforts to strengthen local structures.

During the meeting, the committee extended a call for wider engagement, including participation from DG Dr. Josiah Joekai, Hon. Patrick Honnah, Hon. Amara Quardu Muhammad Kamara, Hon. Sheikh Sheriff, as well as diaspora supporters such as Mavolo Dorbor and Patrick Kpayeh.

Committee members stated that individuals who were unable to attend Sunday’s meeting should consider this as the latest update on the planned activities leading up to December 6.

Farmers and traders in Lofa County have reason to celebrate as the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), with support from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), launched the rehabilitation of over 144 kilometers of farm-to-market roads across the county on Saturday, November 15.

The project, part of the Tree Crop Extension Project Phase II (TCEP-II), aims to make it easier for farmers to bring their crops to markets, especially during the rainy season when muddy and damaged roads often leave harvests rotting before they reach buyers.

According to the Ministry, these road improvements will not only ease transportation but also create temporary jobs, stimulate local business, and strengthen Lofa County’s reputation as one of Liberia’s key agricultural hubs.

The rehabilitation will cover roads in six districts, connecting dozens of communities:

Salayea District
Gbonyesla Junction – Gbonyea Town
Gbonyea Town – Kpayawuelleh

Zorzor District
Zorzor – Kilewu
Kilewu – Zealekpala

Quardu Gboni District
Kannalah – Lukamai
Kannalah – Jarmulor

Kolahun District
Ndorbor – Loilyhun
Loilyhun – Quissanba
Kolahun – Bolahun
Kolahun – Ndanbu Town
Ndanbu – Mawuyansu

Voinjama District
Zeayorzu – Lisco
Kpotomai – Kpudeh
Kpudeh – Seekemai
Seekemai – Voinjama Highway

Foya District
Mendigsua – Salleloe
Worsongar – Sodu
Sandia – Langbamba

Local farmer Sorie Gban from Kolahun shared his excitement: “During the rainy season, it is hard to get our rice and cassava to market. These new roads will save our crops and help our children go to school safely.”

The Ministry says the improved roads will not only reduce crop spoilage but also make it easier for families to reach schools, clinics, and markets, improving everyday life in rural communities.

With work already underway, communities across Lofa County are hopeful that the TCEP-II project will bring lasting benefits, opening doors to better livelihoods, stronger trade, and safer travel for everyone.

November 14, 2025

Executive Mansion, Monrovia:-President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has made of several key decisions aimed at strengthening public institutions, enhancing service delivery, and promoting accountability across government.

2. Ms. Kadiatu Diarra Findley – Ambassador-at-Large on the Policy Advisory Council

These appointments support the Administration’s efforts at strengthening Liberia’s diplomatic representation and foreign policy engagement.

At the Ministry of Labor, Mr. John O.F. Kangbah, Jr. has been appointed Inspector General of Labor, replacing Mr. Charles S. Brown, who has been relieved of his position.

These appointments are aligned with the President’s goal of improving performance and accountability within public service.

In a related development, the President has relieved Mr. James A.S. Momo of his duties as Superintendent of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS).

This decision follows a report from the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), which found Mr. Momo liable for the following violations during his tenure, including:
• Failure to comply with Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC) regulations
• Extortion
• Abuse of office
• Criminal conspiracy
• Facilitation of improper activities in contract awarding.

Mr. Momo has accordingly been instructed to immediately turn over all Government of Liberia properties to the Acting Superintendent and to report to the Ministry of Justice for prosecution.

In the meantime the General Auditing Commission (GAC) is continuing its investigation, findings from which will guide further actions.

President Boakai highlighted his Administration’s focus on integrity, effective governance, and responsible stewardship of public institutions.

Our Story

Alternative Youth Radio is a community youth media initiative established in 2016 to provide rural youth with access to information, hands-on media training, employment opportunities, and to serve as a platform where community members and other disadvantaged young people can tell their stories through community engagements, live talk shows, prerecorded programing and messaging.

AYR uses radio training and broadcast to initiate youth dialogue, community building and leadership enhancement.

Established in June 2016 by a 2019 US State Departments Mandela Washington Fellow, James Papy Kwabo, Jr., AYR is Liberia’s first community youth radio station located in Zorzor, Lofa County, which is using innovations and technology to transform youths and the communities in which it operates.

Being housed in its own building constructed by a group of community young people in Zorzor, the station is currently broadcasting on 98.9MHz providing coverage to major communities in Lofa, B**g, Nimba, Gbarpolu as well as parts of neighboring Guinea.
