OPTICOUGH PROFILE
For ages, Lesotho has been longing for traditional medicinal products that are scientifically tested for safety and efficacy. Dr Lerato Seleteng-Kose (a botanist) and Mr Motiki Beleme (a traditional practitioner and chemical technologist) have now provided a long awaited solution. The duo are manufacturing various traditional medicinal products through their company called Optimum Med (Pty)Ltd. These products are professionally prepared (with appropriate concentrations to ensure safety) using a combination of science and indigenous knowledge. Their first product is a traditional herbal mixture (known as Opticough) aimed at fighting respiratory tract ailments. This product is highly relevant in this era of Covid-19, whose opportunistic infections are mainly respiratory. Opticough has been developed using Lesotho’s indigenous medicinal plants, and is used for treatment of coughs, colds and flu. The product was subjected to safety assessment at the Pharmacy Department of the National University of Lesotho (NUL) with reference to hazardous contaminants and residues (heavy metals), and was found to be non-toxic (safe).
Opticough is professionally packaged and labelled providing dosage instructions in both English and Sesotho. The label also provides expiry date and list of ingredients. The product does not have any side effects and can be used by both adults and children (from 3 years). Opticough was released to the market in September 2020 and is currently available in various pharmacies, clinics and health shops nationwide. These outlets include:
