During these of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, the UN Resident Coordinator, Amanda Mukwashi reminds us that silence enables violence, and accountability saves lives.

Through the Cooperation Framework, the UN in Lesotho is working together to tackle gender-based violence with a focus on human rights, ensuring survivors are supported, systems are strengthened, and women and girls are protected.

Ending GBV requires all of us to speak out, act, and stand with survivors, every day.

begins with a national commitment to ending gender-based violence.

Lesotho has marked a major milestone in strengthening protection and support for survivors of gender-based violence with the official opening of Boiketlong multi-purpose centre.

Her Majesty Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso, Patron of Boiketlong, supported by His Majesty King Letsie III, officially unveiled the centre, a safe space where survivors can access care, dignity, and pathways to recovery.

The centre has now been formally handed over to the Government of Lesotho, under the leadership of the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development, which will oversee its long-term management and sustainability.

This achievement reflects strong national leadership, supported through close collaboration with the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Amanda Khozi Mukwashi, and the wider UN family:

• UNFPA – Shelter renovations, equipment, and vehicle donation
• UNICEF – ECD centre registration, staffing, and materials
• WHO & UNAIDS – Health clinic equipment
• WFP – School feeding support and vehicle donation
• UN Women – Civil society strengthening
• OHCHR – Technical support to integrate a human-rights-centred approach into the design and operationalisation of the centre, ensuring no one is left behind
• World Bank & partners – Legal aid, psychosocial support, and logistics

We also acknowledge the support of the private sector, business community, and individual donors in Lesotho, whose generosity and commitment helped make the centre a reality.

Together, we are demonstrating that preventing GBV and supporting survivors requires whole-of-society action, from government, communities, the UN, and the private sector alike.

The United Nations and partners from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, and Zambia are gathering in Maseru for a Stock-Take of the Africa Regional Programme to End Gender-Based Violence in Southern Africa.

Gender-based violence remains a persistent challenge across the region, rooted in deep-seated inequalities, poverty, unemployment, and social and institutional barriers. In response, the Joint Sub-Regional GBV Programme was developed collaboratively by UN Resident Coordinator Offices and partners across six countries to tackle these root causes and accelerate progress toward gender equality.

The initiative takes a comprehensive and transformative approach to ending violence against women and girls, working across four key pillars: strengthening laws and institutions, advancing prevention, improving response, and empowering women’s movements. It promotes cross-country learning, South-South cooperation, and alignment with key regional frameworks such as the SADC Protocol and Strategy on Gender and GBV and the SADC Model Laws on GBV and Child Marriage.

This two-day dialogue provides a platform to reflect on progress, share lessons, and strengthen collaboration with governments, donors, and partners turning commitments into concrete action to and advance the . 💜

The meeting focused on:
✅How Parliament can reinforce oversight and accountability in responding to violence, including GBV
✅The importance of strong, evidence-based policies to protect communities
✅The leadership role of women parliamentarians in promoting peace, justice and community resilience

This convening brings together Parliament, UN agencies, government ministries, civil society, private sector and partners to develop actionable solutions that put people, especially women and girls, at the centre of peacebuilding.
